Did a magazine shoot with a singer at a local pub here in the Chicago area a couple weeks ago. Curious to hear which ones are your faves within this set.
Onstage lighting set up was main Einstein light with bare beauty dish left of camera with another Einstein from up high, behind the subject, gridded, providing the hairlight. Shots at the table, one light setup with softbox camera left, and nice window light coming in from camera right. In the last setup, main light was camera right with a softbox. I had another light camera left that I may have bounced off the ceiling onto her. It's been a couple weeks, can't remember if I did that or just went with a one-light setup.
I like 4 and 5. Is #9 a mockup or the actual cover? Either way, it's a winner.
I think the lighting in the action shots looks too much like portrait lighting. I would have liked to see something more dramatic, something that looks like true stage lighting.
Thanks, everyone. Couple people had commented on the lighting on the stage. Couldn't agree more. I wanted to create a look as if they were on stage, but for whatever reason, magazine didn't want to do that. They wanted to be sure the sound board on the wall behind her could be seen. Oh well.
Doug, yes, it's the cover.
Greg, they tell me that I don't have to edit, but I don't roll like that. So I edit all the shots and give it to them uncropped.
Squirrely, agreed on the hairlight. Thanks!

I think it's easy to see why they picked the shot they did (which is a great shot, by the way). It's number 6, and the pose and expression fit the nature of the article perfectly. Plus, it has enough (almost) negative space enabling the magazine to place text where it's needed.
Thanks, Jim and Steve! (Jim, I threw the smile shot in just for you.)
Steve, in the end, I thought they might choose one of those for the cover, but I did shoot all the pics wide enough so they could use any for a cover. When I shoot for the mag knowing one is going to be a cover shot, I use a different composition than I do for other shots. So 1-5 were all cropped for this display.
Nice set. Agree with Squirrely about 1 and 2. I also think the jacket is not becoming on her as it makes her appear thicker than she really is. I think 3 and below are outstanding with 5 and 6 being my favorites. Too bad the cover blocked out the "fizzie yellow beer is for wussies" and "no crap on tap" stickers on the bar, but after all it is Suburban Life Magazine. I think those stickers work well with the story of her being a beautiful girl with a bit of edge and tough in 6.
Ha! That's funny. I didn't even think of the stickers like that. It was actually the magazine's art director who requested using this spot. I'm convinced they intentionally covered the "C" in "No Crap on Tap", it being a suburban mag.
