I have the Tamron 90mm Macro 1:1 lens that they recently came out with a couple of years ago, and while it's been okay, it just doesn't seem to get close enough as the photos I see on this site. I'm wondering if Extension Tubes might improve the use of this lens, or is that overdoing it?
Also, I've heard that there are "close-up" filters that can be used to improve the use of macro lenses as well. Does anyone know about these as well? They come in diopters from what I understand.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Yes a set of extension tubes would double the max magnification of the lens - ie get to just over 2:1.
I would not use closeup filters as they tend to be low quality but you can get good quality add on diopters such as the Raynox series.
These just clip on the front of the lens with an adapter and can be used on a variety of lenses.
The DCR-250 would give you near to 2:1 whilst the MSN-202 would take you to 3:1 or more.
Another alternative is to reverse another lens onto the front of the tamron using a male-male coupling ring. a lens around 50mm focal length would be similar to the MSN-202 dioptre.
The magnifying effect of supplementary lenses (they are not filters, although the industry insists on calling them that) increases proportionally with increase in focal length.
I have the Raynox MSN-202 but I found the working distance on my Kiron 105mm unacceptably short.
