p.1 #1 · Mother & Son #2

Thanks for those that critiqued my first image. This is the second one I took which I think technically is better and the lighting is better as well. Thanks for looking and any critique!!

This is a big improvement with respect to the pose. I like it a lot.

On my monitor, the boy's face looks a little blown out and the woman's shadow a bit dark. Might try to add more fill from the other side.

I wonder how it might work if the boy had a shirt on. Right now there is a lot of contrast between his white skin and her darker arm that distracts from the faces. A shirt that brought toned down the brightness of his chest might be an improvement. Just spitballing.

Thank you for the suggestions which I agree with. My son has an issue wearing shirts.... it shows more than I thought....of course my wife's sunless tanning cream probably does not help much! I was also purposely trying to not add more fill and just experimenting with one light but I think my AB400 on super low power might have helped. Thanks again for the critique.

You are welcome. It is an awesome shot of your wife and son as it is. I like their expressions in this one more than the other one too. They look more playful.

Thank you Andre I'm glad you like it. Shooting in the studio is something I haven't done a lot of and I'm a slow learner so I appreciate the comment.

Very nice shot. You might consider just flipping the lighting. Putting the darker skinned person (your wife in ths case) closer to the key might solve the lighting balance. Whatever fill you need could be done with a white card just out of frame. Nice job.

This is maybe just me, but the boy is old enough that it makes for a bit of muddy storytelling as to his not wearing a shirt. It just doesn't fit the setting. On a beach or with a prop like a surfboard or something it would be fine, but here the question of why distracts. Also, as others have said the lighting is bit uneven between the subjects.

This is of course mainly just critique for critique's sake, as it is still a very pleasing picture overall.
