p.1 #1 · Panaroma from Arches (edit 1)

Edits: agree that previous version was a bit dim and unbalanced. Although I really liked the rock on the left, this feels much more balanced.

I had wanted to shoot this for a while, just to have in my personal collection as I really love the backdrop with the mountains. I waited until the clouds lit up... compromised sun on the rock a bit, but it was richer, deeper shade of orange, at least.

(hopefully this auto scrolls)

This has great potential. The colors are excellent, the light is excellent and your perspective is great. The tones are spot on too, but I would probably lighten it up just a tad. It feels *slightly* under exposed. Also, I really think keeping the ratio to 3:1 or so would help make the composition more powerful. I can see a number of great pictures within your pano. I'm jealous of that light

Now that's nice. Beautiful light, and the scene lends itself well to panoramic treatment. Slabshaft may be right -- I'll looking at this on my work laptop, which tends to be on the bright side, and it looks slightly dark, which means it would probably be quite a bit darker on my calibrated monitor.

I agree... brighten just a little, but it's a great shot. I love the contrast of the snow covered peaks against the red rocks of the desert. Very nice.

This is really nice! I've never seen this take on Arches before. The longer focal length combined with the panoramic format really helps to bring the mountains in closer. So often they are an afterthought in the distant background. Love the deep natural colors and clouds over the mountains. The only thing I'm not ecstatic about is the way the pillar on the left being a bit close to the edge of the frame, and not really having anything compositionally to balance it out on the right.

I'd say you waited just right. Lots of good ideas given.

Took some of the suggestions and made a change.

Seems bright enough on my monitor. . .

Knocked out the left side and pulled things back on the right side as well. Wanted to keep the good mountain peaks in the frame...

That's one of the best views possible in Arches. You did well here. And were presented with beautiful light and clouds.

Nice!

Yeah, over the years I noticed a few photos with this sort of view and loved the potential. I love snow capped mountains and red rock.

Shot it with a 70-200, but really needed more zoom to get isolation against the mountain with a few of the objects... I'll have to try that next. Nice to have the pano in the collection, though.

I did shoot this once before but totally screwed up timing and missed the good light on the rocks. Things came together really well this time... it was my first night in the park, got there 1 hour before sunset and immediately drove to this spot. Knew what I wanted. (although I probably would have worked the angles a little better if I had do over... oh well, hard to nail perfection)

Didn't see the original image, but this edit looks absolutely fantastic. Love the beautiful quality of the side-lighting, and the clarity and significant presence of the snow-capped mountains. Great vision for this image Derek, and wonderfully captured and processed. Excellent work.

Super panorama Derek! I also haven't seen the original. So looking at this version the only thing that stick out to me and it is a tough one is the tiny bit of blue sky at the top of the image. Since there is no other blues in the image my eyes get drawn to it. a tiny crop off the top fixes that for me. Just my opinion as it is a super image either way.

Fascinating image. The pano really works here and the light is beautiful and makes all the elements come together. Nicely done.
