p.1 #1 · 7dII vs 5DIII can you tell the difference?

These were shot Saturday at my Grandson's game. All but one are my grandson. One is a friend of his. Same lousy photographer, same 70 200 2.8 II lens, same game, rotten lighting, high ISO's.

There have been alot of comments made concerning the noise level of the 7DII. I just don't see that there is that much difference.

These were all processed similarly.

I am not the best Basketball Photographer, I don't shoot it often, and this particular gym has the teams on one side and the spectators on the other, so no switching sides. Partly because of this, I got alot more shots of his backside than his face.

All that said, I'd love to know if you tell the difference. There is only one shot that I can. ISO's vary but are all high. Cameras were both on Auto ISO. Which shots are with the 5DIII and which are with the 7DII?

#1 is the 7d, #2 I would say is the 5d.

At web size it's hard to tell. But I suspect you changed bodies at the half and the first 3 are in one direction and the last 2 the other. So in that regard I'll take a 50/50 WAG that the first three are the 5D3 and the last two the 7D2. Or the other way around.

Yeah, I'd say #2 is the 5Diii. Correct?

Looking on my iPad at web size pics it is hard to tell. I'd say 1, 4, and 6 were taken with the 7d.

One thing that I think helps the 7DII is that I seem to be able to shoot Basketball with raw and not slow it down like the 5DIII will. I never attempt to shoot raw for any sports with it. No matter how bad the lighting.

Also, for me the 1.6 crop made the 70 200 just too much reach for BB. I preferred it on the 5DIII if for no other reason than it's FF with this lens.

I'd say the first 3 are 5D3 & the last 3 are 7D2 w/#5 having a bit more noise reduction applied than #4 & #6.

When they are that close, it really does not matter one iota, does it

As for those making comments concerning the noise level of the 7D2, we know they are just noisy people, don't we?

The truth is that in processing them I had to look to see which is which.

Actually number 5 has a little less NR. I remember backing it off a little to keep detail. But they are all really pretty similar.

#4 7d2
#5. 5d3
#6 7d3

BTW, what ISO's were you shooting at?
Thanks for sharing!

I cheated and checked the EXIF so I won't spoil the fun but before I did that I had no real idea. Everything was 6400 or higher. I'd say presented at this size they all look good. If you couldn't tell even at full res then that is a good sign and means you can comfortably shoot whichever one suits the situation.

Just a little confused by this statement.

Shooting at a low ISO and writing only to at UDMA 7 CF card, the 5Dmk3 will capture almost 30 full RAW files before the buffer fills. Once the buffer fills, the camera drops from 6 fps to about 2 fps.

At higher ISO's that number will decrease as the files become bigger.

Wait, what? With 1000x or faster CF card I can rattle off 30 shots in 5 seconds with the 5d3. Clears pretty quickly too. You're either using the SD or a slow CF card. Honest.

I should probably try it again. It was when the camera was just out that i tried it and learned to just shoot jpg on the CF card and remove the SD card to avoid missing shots waiting for the butter. I know I did not have cards then as fast as I do now,. I now have several of the 1000 x CF cards and I should probably try it. But, I prefer jpg for most sports that I do, and I don't shoot BB that often so it's not been an issue. Most of what I shoot is daytime outdoor football and baseball. I like to do sports posters and with the high ISO's it is just a struggle to get shots that I can blow up enough with the poor lighting in the local gyms. 3 years ago, I do know that my camera would just totally stop due to the buffer. At some point for sports, I just started using the 1000x UDMA 7 cards, and pulling the SD and shooting Jpg. Thanks for correcting me, I would like to be able to shoot raw for BB when needed and probably should have tried it and not just gone from habit.

4 of them are ISO 6400, 1 is 8000 and 1 is 12800. What I found amazing is the one that was 12800. I would have never guessed.

My vote:
1. 5D3
2. 7D2
3. 5D3
4. 7D2
5. 5D3
6. 7D2

I too have both the 5D3 and 7D2 and I find the 5D3 has at least 1-stop advantage noise-wise. After post processing, though, it won't be too easy to tell.

Kathy, the EXIF is intact...after three passes without seeing much if any difference...I looked

I know not what Canon has done sensor or processing wise, but the 7D2 implementation has stepped things up. I usually look at faces/skin tones when evaluating indoor sports images and in both the 5D3 and 7D2 images there are very subtle color changes given different lighting, yet both sensors seem to be producing these equally. This is pretty cool stuff

Thank you for posting these images, I'm encouraged with what I'm seeing, even your photographic prowess
Keep shooting, I wish I could capture kids sports so well...

Cheers,
Jerry
