Someone needs to tell Sony that a sticker for the serial number was a bad idea. If you use the camera at all for any type of real use the sticker starts to peel off. Is there any other place on the lens that has serial number? This was a bad idea, someone needs to tell them to engrave it somewhere. I know that it cost a bit more. But if they want to be considered in the same circles they really need to get that sucker engraved.
Same on my $1350 16-35 lens. Cheap Sony, and stupid, it's not even put on that straight. Does the SN show up in EXIF at least? I haven't seen it there but you might need to use the sony software or something. Doesn't show up in Bridge CS6
Are you sure it's the whole sticker coming off? The Sony serial numbers have a thin layer of protective plastic over them - similar to the film that comes on new electronics that prevents them from getting scratched during assembly or packaging. It can be removed, and the sticker itself is quite robust.

The stickers on two of my lenses are peeling off...
Edited: I looked at the serial numbers more carefully. It looks like the numbers were printed on the lens itself, the plastic sticker just covers it.

Well, I found something new today. The serial number on the 55mm f1.8 was engraved on the lens with the sticker covering it. If the sticker peels off, you still have the serial number on the lens, but not so with my 16-70mm f4 OSS, the serial number was just printed on the sticker, once the stick peels off, you don't have a serial number anymore on the lens. Unbelievable for a $1000 "Zeiss"/Sony lens.
Hmmmm... I'd like to know what are the 8 digit numbers engraved on the front rims of the Zeiss/Sony FE 4/16-35 ZA OSS, FE 4/24-70 ZA OSS, FE 2,8 35 ZA and the FE 1,8/55 ZA. These have stickers on their barrels which are peeling off but with different numbers than those engraved. The only lens that has a sticker and no engraving is the FE 4/70-200 G OSS which doesn't have a Zeiss logo. Maybe it does have an engraving somewhere but I haven't found it yet.
IMO, if Sony wants to have a shot at competing they better fix these simple things. I have $4,000 in My Sony kit and three of the four are peeling their serial number stickers. I have not even shot a wedding with them. That is casual use after two months.
If the sticker comes off and gets lost will Sony honor the Zeiss S/N engraved on the front of the lens?
It would be easy for Sony to associate those differing SN one to the other.
