p.2 #15 · Smoky Mountain Black Bears | |
Wow - thank you for all the responses, votes, and kind words It's truly appreciated.
#1 was really a ridiculously lucky shot. I spotted the cubs in a tree while driving down Hyatt Lane. No one around, I hiked out and maneuvered around until I had a nice view of this little guy. I couldn't have posed him better or put him in a better spot - it just worked out really well. I have tons of cub-on-a-branch photos that I'd be embarrassed to show, but every now and then I guess you get one
I’ve also been lucky with expressions - but I think the bears are always really expressive anyway.

An excellent series. 1 and 2 are dynamite IQ. I like the poses in the others but they are not up to the quality of the first two.
Ted
Thanks Ted - The last three - especially the cubs, might need just a little more love in the post processing dept. Not sure though - it was foggy and there’s just not a lot of room to much the files. Still, worth another look - thanks

all great images.. when is the best time to go for cub photos? I talk about going some day so this inspires me to go some day for a week or so. Thanks for sharing..
June for sure - you can see bear most anytime from May - Nov, but the blackberries ripen in June. Blackberries only grow open meadows, so it brings the bears out of the dark woods into the light. Tons of them gather in Cade's Cove. I've talked to people who have seen upwards of 30 in a day (I've not, but I take off when the light gets bad and I avoid the place in the evening - no amount of bears can overcome the traffic frustrations!)

They're all great Steve, but my favorite is the first one. That little guy, you want to take home with you.
Thanks!
I'm glad his mother didn't think that was my plan, She was right under the tree!

Fantastic Steve! Give me shout when you head this way. You probably can find the bears easier than I can and they are my neighbors.
Thansk!
Sounds good - hopefully we’ll cross paths

I think the first and last shots are outstanding. Nice work with an 850mm focal length at 1/400 as well!
Thanks - the credit goes to my tripod more than me though

Fun (and good) shots Steve. The cubs are so cute (unlike those from Chicago). Sure a lot of green reflected onto the snout of the first one.
Thanks!
It's funny, I never really noticed the green in his face until you pointed it out. I made a quick fix and the improved image is now up instead. Thanks!!!!

Love these Steve. Such emotional shots of the bears. I love the ones of the cubs. #1 and #4 are amazing!
Thanks - I think bears are some of the most expressive animals I photograph. Seems like all you have to do is hang around and you end up with some kind of cool expression or pose

Agree - When I first started doing wildlife, I actually resisted them - seemed like it was too much effort. Now, I can’t stay away!
