Have you tried the comparison at different apertures and on different temperature lights ? I'm sure I read here on FM that the light temperatures have an effect as well as, naturally, the apertures. It would be nice to know the cut-off points.

Unfortunately, I haven't tried different combos of lights, apertures and lenses. I have used two different 35mms (FE & Lux FLE). I'll try to test a few other things before selling my a7. I'm pretty sure, however, the trend is clear. The a7ii handles point sources of light much better than the a7, and is probably similar to the a7r in that regard. It wouldn't surprise me if the difference between the a7 and a7ii changes a bit with lens and FL. I have a couple of friends with 5d2 and 5d3 bodies -- I may try to do a night shoot with them down the road.
It also seems, based on a small sample of a7ii shots, that the majority of the frame is pretty safe from reflections. There are still some reflections on the borders, but they are heavily dampened versus previous models.
If the rain ever stops I'll get out for some actual night shots!

Actually, the a7ii was out of focus because of my configuration error. I set autofocus to work off the AF/MF button rather than the half-press shutter. That way I control when it focuses. However, I forgot to turn off the "Pre-AF" setting. So...in the dark, I focused on the streetlight, then recomposed. After a couple of seconds, the camera tries to prefocus again, except that area was dark. It took me about an hour to figure that out this morning. I went through the same thing when I set up the a7 and forgot about it

It is true that the A7 shot seems brighter than the A7II and they should have the same exposure, but the lighting situations aren't identical. Whatever is shining on the upper right corner in the A7 photo clearly isn't there in the A7 II photo and that may account for the car being more illuminated as well, and in addition in the A7 photo there seems to be headlights shining on the speed limit sign and bush just past it that aren't there on the A7 II photo. So the lighting in this real world situation doesn't seem to be identical.
I doubt the ISO sensitivity will be different, but we will know once it is more fully tested.

I certainly appreciate the comparison, but maybe a more controlled environment is called for.
The a7II shot is one stop down, ISO up. Would this account for the lack of sensor reflection in the II shot? Also, big difference in color balance, is auto balance off?
Not that it matters in this test of sensor reflection, but obviously IBIS is off on the II shot?

I don't have another body to do a side by side so instead, here are a few 'real world' images with the potential for sensor reflections. Understand these are all handheld, autoISO, night time shots. Basically I just shot some street scenes on my way to work this morning. Next test for me will be some tripod night shots to see if any reflections show up on long exposures.

I would be surprised if the a7ii has less smearing. After testing with different adapters, I've concluded the 24 Elmar smearing and color shift are "about the same" on the a7ii versus the a7. The same was true with the 35 Lux FLE, which performs very well on both cameras, but has a very similar minor color shift and some corner softness at wide apertures.
