Tim, that's a good one. Tit for tat. However, all of my lenses are equipped with replacement feet and I have started making ample use of pods as of late.

Peter, given it's Winter I'd imagine fulling testing your new gearz won't be flushed out until next year when pijun activity is less stressed; your shoulder as well. Seems to me that Spring/Summer of 2015 will provide a more pleasurable domain for shooting and that we 'want-to-knows' need to chill a bit and let you master yet another 400

Exactly, Jerry, this is not our prime shooting season up here either. Adequate targets are not easy to come by. And then come by again to repeat things, so as to be sure.
I had a real bad start the other day, wind down the river buffeting the birds and me. This is neither Florida, nor California. So the first shots were bad, as those 3 pictures in the OP reflect.
Then, I also had a few good ones too in the sea of bad shots. Would I base my determination on the selection of those few good shots ? Of course not. Now, frankly, most people here wouldn't know one way or another, but there are a few people on this board to whom I feel I owe a solid/dependable assessment, based on our past good interactions, and not because they helped me buy this lens. (I wish they did.)

I certainly can attest to the bad, cold, windy, snowy and sometimes rainy weather here. Not to metion no subjects to photograph except for bare leafless trees against grey skies.

Notwithstanding, i have plan B if needed with some furry, four-legged felines who, for the most part, are willing subjects and can move pretty quickly. I'll wait patiently for the results.

Petkal is know for humorous teasing and that’s what I and many people appreciate, but…………….. To all to whom it applies:

“Primitive boorishness and total disrespect are not conducive to any meaningful communications”.

Can't we raise some money and send Peter to Bosque del Apache so we don't have to wait so long for the test results?

Peter,
In an offer of international cooperation, if you'd ship the 400mm II to me for a week I could provide you with an entire portfolio of the elusive "Canadian Snow Bird" that arrives here beginning around Thanksgiving (USA date) and stay until things start warming up enough that the natives can stop huddling in their down jackets. (Last week it was actually down to 45º F!)

Won't be able to do any duck shots as it's probably 200 miles + to open water.

Just an idea in the spirit of providing information for the discerning folks who gather here.

Robert

Hah, Geert and Robert are offering some practical ideas, and that is appreciated, however, if Robert has a place for me to crash for a week or so, with nice home cooked meals and an adequate supply of good European beer, I'd like to deliver the lens to him in person, after I am done with the Bosque.

All boxes came together, but it is the small one which got me most intrigued.
Once opened, it revealed a new Canon 44MP dFR fashioned after the infamous Canon 7 RF along with the HiVent 2.5 L respiration capacity jacket.

With those items in hand the big box is almost a yawn. Never less my incoming inspection tests will commence tomorrow.

Mazel tov to you too. I hope to complete my tests long before Yom Kippur.

It is classy. Possibly a collectors dream. However, …..just read the Info. and Warnings advising:

Read all operating instruction before using this product.
It shows how to: open the box, operate the focus ring, set the shutter speed, use the frame advance knob without loosing any pixels and safely rewinds all files into the cassette.

Then it says: It is a replica only (disaster), but not a toy (big relief), accidental swallowing may cause suffocation/injury (I just choked).

Humbug...... I was duped.

Looks like Canon finally standardized the cap for 4 big pipes.
The font element recess is 1 inch. May be partially effective if the lens has good flare resistance.

On the pictures I've seen, the camera looks like a very well crafted replica.

I was planning to do some 800mm test in my wildlife studio today. However, the light in Southern Ontario has been so bad all day that even 1DX could not cut it.

If you have any questions on the lens, do not be bashful, just ask, PM works best. My testing progress has been rather slow, but hopefully comprehensive and thorough. However, as early as next week I expect that there will be all sorts of 400 DO MkII reviews and pictures available on the net......there will be no shortage of info there.

Jesting aside, it really is a beautiful replica of Hansa Canon to commemorate the 75th anniversary, but I don’t recognize the name. When first released, I was probably a copy of the Leica Model F or D. I’m sure there are people who know more. It comes in a very attractive presentation case and the camera has moving parts. This truly surprised me, so that the big box wasn’t the main focus point. If this promo is still available I’d suggest you go for it.

Thanks for you kind offer. If I have questions, I’ll PM you. It helps to compare notes. The weather in my area is also cats, dogs and polar bears. I’ll start tomorrow, but it is a busy season and I don’t plan any rush tests, since I may have 2 units to assess and it has to be done sans any errors. Then, I’ll venture outdoors.

The 400 DOs are truly custom made lenses considering that Canon made only about 8 000 units. If they’re collectible, then owners of the old version, in mint shape, may get a very attractive sale price.

How can you tell that they've made about 8000 units ? Are you referring to the old one ? I guess by looking at a very recently bought brand new 400 DO MKI, its serial number would approximate a total number of units made.

Two "units" to asses ? Is that your new 400 DO MkII vs. your iPhone 6 ?

Old ones. The S/N on the boxes were: #917……..AA….., but there were also different numbers on the barrel. I’m referring to the barrel #s. If the numbering scheme changed during 20+ years then my assessment is wrong. But the exact number isn’t as important as the fact of a very ltd. volume due to low demand and negative opinions, to which you also contributed by your review.

- Two "units" to asses ? Is that your new 400 DO MkII vs. your iPhone 6 ?

Two DOs vs. Kodak Browne, my gold standard, makes 3 units, which means more gruelling effort and gut crunching suspense.

I'll post when I have anything definitive to add.

Two "units" to asses... Sounds like a convert-to-donkeys process.
