I usually only post in the Nikon forum, but it was suggested that these pics may find a more appropriate home here.
Here in Cayman, we have a yearly festival called Pirates Week, where the island is invaded by pirates, wenches and revellers. I managed to buttonhole one of the better-dressed pirates for an sunset photo shoot, and here are some of the results…
My pick of the set is #3 (numbering them helps when we comment). The expression on his face in that one is the most realistic for me. He posing well in all of them, but I found the expressions in some shots too friendly and not so "pirate like". FWIW.
very creative, but.....I dont personally like the mix of ambient and flash you have here. maybe more side lighting in closer for more of a dramatic look.....nice job none the less

Very very nice set.
The guy does resemble Depp.
Was the ship just a backdrop or was it actually there?
On some photos the light looks a bit harsh (last two photos, to be specific). That also might be due to the strong vignetting.
His expressions were spot on. Very fun set.

Thanks for all the great feedback, guys! I hear what y'all arrrrrrr saying about the lighting being maybe a touch hot. If I did it over, I'd be inclined to dial back the strobes a tad, and move them back so he's more side-lit than front-lit, just to add a little more mood. There were 3 of us shooting, and committee decisions always tend to be a compromise.
The actor does look amazingly Depp-like, even when he's in mufti. Great guy to work with too!
And yes, the pirate ship really was in the background. Cap'n Jack was supposed to be onboard, but they left 15 minutes before schedule, hence the expression in pic #3.
Great expressions, subject, and set, but the artificial lighting is way too hot vis-a-vis the background. I would like to see a little more balance between ambient and flash... you might be able to do it in post, as it looks like there's plenty of information in the dark areas.
