p.1 #1 · Lost in the Woods

Hi everyone,
This is my first post here. I have been lurking for the past several months, and am regularly blown away by the photos posted here. I suppose it's about time I offered something for discussion. By way of background, I am an amateur photographer. My main goal is to create memorable photographs of my family. I have much to learn, and I appreciate the help you provide to each other.

These are a few pictures of my youngest son, Luke. I had shot a few happy pictures earlier in the day for his "official" 3rd birthday photos. Later, the last remaining leaves on the trees lit up with the setting sun, and I rushed him outside for a few more pics. He was in a melancholy mood, and I was happy to capture these expressions of his gentle and humble spirit. C&C welcome.

Love these shots, Auburn. I really like his melancholy look, it comes across well in photography. Love 'em all, no real favorite.

A couple nits. On No. 1, if you had light that could get into his eyes and create highlights in his eyes, that would really improve a closer up image like this. I'll turn my subjects into a circle looking for the light to get into their eyes. On 2 and 3, he looks a little cooler (in terms of color tones) than the sunlit tree behind him.

Anyway, glad you're posting and hope to see a lot more from you.

Ron

Nice portraits - I think they'll last. He looks healthy, is dressed well and you did your part.

Welcome to FM!

Exceptional portraits. Luke is a handsome young fellow and you captured his pensive mood perfectly. Really like your presentation and processing.

Really nice photos - a few quick comments:

#1 - the eyes are a little under lit. Sometimes you can lift the light on a shot like this in post and make it work, but a reflector or a small kiss from an off cam flash would have helped this shot a lot.

#2 & 3 - the tones in these are a little cool on the boy compared to background.

#4 - best shot of the group. I love how you are down on the ground with him and the exposure is very nice.

This little guy seems to be an old soul in these photos. You are creating some great photos for your family no doubt.

I just saw Ron had nearly identical comments as what I noticed - pardon the repetition; hope it is helpful anyway.

Thank you! I am actually editing solely on my ipad at this point, while I shop for a new computer. I find it pretty limiting, but I appreciate how much it makes me preplan my shots.

I agree with all of your points. Just playing around with #1 I was able to lighten his eyes a bit, and fortunately there are even some subtle catchlights in his eyes. A reflector would have made a big difference. That you and Ron agree reinforces the validity of your comments. Thank you!

I should have added to my original post that my name is Justin. It is nice meeting you all.

Thank you. It's funny how they won't let you shoot them when they're young due to their haphazard movements and short attention span. Then they get older and just don't want their picture taken at all. I keep telling myself they'll appreciate it when they grow up and have kids of their own.

What a great shots! Sharp enough, good colours and composition!
The clobber and cheeky look of this little chap on the 2nd photo reminded me "Peaky blinders" tv show...

I think you need to warm a bit his skin on the 3rd photo.
And make the eyes a bit more bright and expressive on the 1st and 4th photos.
