Not very many people know of this fall in West Virginia. It's off a steep gravel road in the middle of nowhere. It's hard to find and once you find it, it's harder to get down to the base; I performed an admirable butt-slide for quite a few yards to get there. It was all worth it as conditions were perfect-misty overcast skies, big swirl action, and no wind. All I needed was a rainbow. Hope you enjoy...Kevin
Edit: I am adding another pic closer to the swirl from another angle for your viewing enjoyment
Kevin,
That looks like a cool waterfall...wish you were closer to the swirl. The foreground is nice..but it doesn't do much ..IMO closer and a little higher to the swirl would emphasize both the swirl and the waterfall

Thanks Sunny. I have added another pic that is a bit closer and higher.

Hey Kevin,
Man... what a sweet shot! Love that swirl, and all that fall color goodness! I really like the way the water is cascading down so nicely.
And next time... just bring some Skittles with you... I think a Rainbow will appear then...
Jim
Thanks Jim. I have been wondering what to put in the small unused pocket in my camera bag and now I know!
Those are excellent! I wish we had leaves and swirls like that out here.
I think the foreground in the first image works best. In a larger print and not posted online, the details of the pool and falls will plenty available. The foreground allows a close view of the fall foliage details, and it also provides an anchor and containment field for the trans-dimensional vortex in the pool.
If the lower portion of the images is nothing but swirl, it could make for an unpleasant nausea effect and would not be as favorable, IMO.
Kevin, that is an utterly fantastic location. I am now going to explore every gravel road I come upon in West Virginia.
I think both images have their merits and each can stand on its own. I tend to like a foreground "anchor" and the bed of leaves in the first one provides that. However, because of the low shooting angle, the swirl is deemphasized. The image still works really well, but it isn't as much abut the swirl. In contrast, the second really shows off the swirl, and with the falls makes it more of a water shot. Which image is preferable kind of depends on what message you are trying to convey about the place.
There seems to be a wide sharpening line on the edge of the rock at the base of the falls in the first one, which is absent in the second. That tends to catch my eye, perhaps it could be softened?
But congratulations. Both of these were certainly worth the scramble.
I prefer the closer composition here. Really, really beautiful cascade. I usually write a long critique, but this is just damn nice. I wish that I had made it down to this waterfall when I was down there last month ... it was on my list and I never went. STUPID!!
Personally, I find the foreground in the first one helps more than hurts. It frames the swirl, giving it better context and, for me, it's overall a better pic because of that.
The second makes it all about the swirl, which I find less to my taste.
