Late last Fall at a favorite hiking spot I was returning on a pathway when I noticed something crossing it from a distance. As I approached it got BIGGER Mind you I am no fan of snakes other than I find them fascinating in color and behavior. I was able to get close, close and closer to the point I was lying on the ground less that 6 inches from its head with a macro lens, my trusty cheap Tamron zoom that goes 180-300 in a 1:2 macro mode.
Lots of shots, more to come as I can never make up my mind which ones to post This one was at least 6ft in length which by what I read for Ohio is about the biggest they come, lucky me and I followed it back to its nest/hideout too.

I'm not a big snake fan either. But gesh Karl, this is a great shot....low angle in good light and just enough blur on the end of the tongue to indicate motion. Brilliant!!!

Henrik, I am finding many of my favorite images have been taken laying flat out on my stomach with my neck kinked to see through the viewfinder This one was no exception and thank you kindly for your visit and kind words buddy!

Oh man oh man oh man!!!! What an awesome shot Karl....I love snakes and to be able to get so close without it taking off if so cool...and it gave you a perfect tongue flick or two or three.how could you not love one of these guys...it's beautiful.🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍

L ohhhh I have about 120 images of this guy, just froze for me, gave a bit of a head turn, got the tongue going for me too with lots of action, wishing I had movie mode on that good ole MKIII to share I've got that tongue in about evert pose you could imagine, if that guy had flicked its head or twitched toward me I would have..................probably filled my drawers

Very cool shot Karl... very cool. Love the composition, the little bit of foreground grass is a nice element, detail and color are both fantastic buddy... excellent work.
This is a perfect example of a skilled photographer/image processor who can produce excellent images with even a consumer grade lens.
I was working in the garden last week and found a compost snake about 8", (adult), then an egg, and then a baby about 3". I left them to do their own thing. This is a really nice shot Karl. I love the sharpness, and the comp is, as always, very nice ~ Ron
Oh my god. Awesome capture, Karl. The snake must think you are even a bigger snake when you laying down on your stomach to get this shot. Super low angle works so well.
