Yep, Puffins do fly, but I think they are optimized for swimming.. They have small wings and tend to fly very fast. Not easy to get BIF shots. Still, the Tammy was up to it when I tried.
Finally got my newest Tamron and the first question I had about it was quickly answered on these quick handheld grey day test shots on the Nikon DF at 600mm and ISO 1600.
While these are not up to the level of the other posts here, perhaps this will serrve as a post for those wanting to know if the average Joe can make this lens work and I would say definitely yes as again these are all handheld at 600mm. I have had the BIGMA 50-500 for several years and wondered how this lens would compare and the answer is I have no issues selling my Bigma now. It will be fun to get this lens out in good light and with a real effort to make good photos.
This lens as 600 is much better than I imagined it would be as is the VC!

All Tamron owners switched to Sigma?
I'm still in love with mine. Taken at Manzanita Lake in Lassen NP.
Steve,
How do you rate the Tamron 150-600 against the 80-400G? Obvious differences in price and focal length aside, do you only shoot the Tamron at 600, or does it supplant the Nikon in the crossover focal lengths as well?
My Tamron stays at 600 99% of time, still feeling focal length limited. I get much better images than using 300mm/2.8 with 2x TC. Probably user error, but with my technic, I'm sticking with Tamron. Sorry, I never tried 80-400VR.
If you meant this Steve, I often shoot the Tamron at the full 600mm handheld, and at shutter speeds less than half the focal length. The VC holds up well at these shutter speeds.
This image was shot hand held, while hanging over a cliff. Far from an ideal shooting position. Still sharp, and with a nice background rendering as a bonus.
I find the lens delivers sharp images, good contrast, and nice rendering. Pretty good for a lens with this reach, that is light enough to travel with, and is such a reasonable price.
Since I got the Tamron my Nikon 80-400 rarely comes out.
