p.3 #1 · RRS vs. Gitzo Tripod

Mg alloys, esp. the older alloys, will corrode just from fog in the air. A friend had a sports car part made of Mg "rust" while sitting on a shelf in his garage.

You want to inspect periodically and you definitely should treat that "white powdery former metal."

maybe Ti is the solution for those parts?

Boeing has a new super Al-Li alloy they are touting, so if you go back behind their facility and do some dumpster diving...

gitzo did that (Ti) in a very limited and expensive small collectors run a few years ago. $2500 w/leather bag. one of their traveler models.

on AL/Li:

looking into the properties/limitations of Scandium

i have enough contacts at big B to get some though very limited cooperation. just was playing with a 787-9 today. i haven't been out there lately but there is Boeing Surplus online and the store in Kent. used to have some fun stuff.
