This is a cool shot, Jim. I just learned something too: lightning triggers
But, what you did is what I always thought would make sense, just "fire away", i.e. lock off the cable release.
Nice juxtaposition of bright flowers with foreboding skies. The X factor is icing on the cake.
Jim, interestingly caught the moment of lightning, but it surprises me that a lot of guys saw this picture surprisingly fantastic shot drawing attention to Х.
In my opinion, a lot of space the upper part of the image due to the small lightning, and cropping the image. Thanks for sharing.

I am glad you like it, it was fun being able to capture it!
As for Lightning triggers, they do have their place. With digital now, it is a lot easier to just fire away. The two times now that I have captured some cool lightning it was with the remote release locked in, and not with the Lightning Trigger, even though I have one.
One issue with just locking in the remote release is if you are shooting during the day where it's harder to get longer shutter speeds, one can fill up the buffer fast. So I did bursts of shots as I tried to mentally time it to the gaps between the bolts of the lightning. The other time I got some cool lightning was in Red Rocks outside of Vegas, and it was getting closer to sunset when I was shooting, so I could much easier get I think 1 or 2 sec shutter speeds and not have the buffer choke up on me.

Awesome catch!!! You always seem to find these little gems when you have a camera in hand. Well done.

Thanks so much Deb! I am glad you like it. And yeah, it does help to always carry camera(s) with you...

Incredible shot Jim. Love the sky and foreground. The unusual lighting seals the deal.

I appreciate that Fred, it did turn out pretty cool! This is going to be one of my candidates I think for the OC Fair next year.

Really like it - the "X" is cool. You're fortunate to be able to find a nice FG on such short notice!
Thanks Steve, glad you like it, and yeah, it was really sweet finding that foreground.

Very cool random image. Very nice foreground.
Hey Derek,
Glad you liked it. I prefer to think of it as a "spontaneous" image rather than a "random" image though. For me the word random conjures up an image of someone just randomly pointing a camera and shooting without any thought or determination. While spontaneous for me indicates quickness of thought and mind and intention.
Maybe it's the same thing, but being spontaneous sure makes me feel better...
