p.1 #1 · #124 The Ranger and the Bodie Island Light

This lone park ranger, or if you prefer, 'The Lone Ranger', provides an element of scale to the lofty height of the Bodie Light in Nags Head, NC.

Good luck to all this month.

Best,
Ed

I really like this one Ed. I had to look for the ranger. That is a good-sized lighthouse.
Nice entry.

Thanks for the reply, Greg. Sorry to make it so difficult to notice the 'lone ranger'.

By the way, the lighthouse is the third edition. First was too short, and ineffective. Second was blown up by the Confederate Army to prevent the Union Army from using it as an observation tower. This one, which has a height of 165 feet, was just renovated in the last few years, and is still a working example of a coastal lighthouse. It sits inland quite a ways to limit the risk of being overtaken by the shifting shoreline. The bases of the first two versions of this lighthouse are now submerged below the Atlantic Ocean. The island is eroding from the east, and rebuilding on its western side. I also learned on this visit that most folks mispronounce the name of the island, and light. Bodie Island is pronounced like the word 'body', rather than 'bow-dee'. It is thought that this may be attributed to the many bodies that long ago washed ashore there as a result of frequent shipwrecks in the area.
