p.1 #1 · Anyone buy a hot shoe cover for their D810?

Since the D810 doesn't come with a BS-1, did anyone pick one up?

The reason I'm asking is I'm curious if it's a really tight fit or not. I put a BS-1 in my B&H order along with some memory cards, and it would take more force than I am comfortable with to slide into the hot shoe. Anyone else have one? Is it really tight?, or did I get a defective BS-1 and just need to shave it down a bit? Don't care either way as they are $2.00, but I am curious.

Thanks!

It should feel snag but not tight.
Try to mount a Nikon speed light on the hotshoe to see if it is the hotshoe or the BS-1.

I'll try a flash in there tonight, but just by the looks of it I'm sure it will be a non-issue.

Usually I can take a BS-1 out with pressure from my thumb, but if I were to install it on the D810, I'd have to pull, pry, and wiggle it out of there which is why I think my $2.00 BS-1 may be defective haha!

Every camera I have bought from Nikon has come with one of those hot shoe covers. Now Nikon is not not send them with the new cameras?

I always wanted to see if the BS-2 fit on bodies other than the D3.

The BS-2 will work on a D3/s, D4/s, but will not fit on the D700, D800/E or the D810 due to side obstruction. Also the price is a few times higher.
I really can't believe Nikon will skip a 15¢ part and allow the contacts to be corroded by salt water in the air.

I bought an original Nikon BS-1 and it fits perfect.

There is no salt water in the air. Rain falls salt-free. Moisture in the air is salt-free. The only place you find salt water in the air is at the oceanside. Alberta is pretty far from any ocean.

I am curious why is it a big issue? Canon never supplies such a part! Because it's one more piece to keep track of, I don't even put it on the camera.

while i agree with the "need" factor not being there i have to say near ocean based locations do contain a higher content of dissolved salt in the local environmental atmosphere. the design of said BS-1 would not prevent infiltration to areas susceptible to it. other environmental agents in other areas (aka: acid rain) can induce corrosion in materials too. again the BS-1 wouldn't do diddly to prevent it.

that is it interferes with the pop up flash unless trimmed.

No, and Nikon only added that plastic piece in the last decade or a bit more. I don't use them as they are always in the way when a flash is urgently needed, though I'm sure there are situations when one would never use a shoe-mount flash.

I've never used a flash in my life. So I always leave mine on. It makes me feel good.

The thing is, Nikon shouldn't be doing stuff like this. People like consistency, they like getting the LCD cover, they like the little hot shoe. If you got it with ten cameras before, why do you suddenly not get it? It's poor marketing (more than function, or cost savings) - for pennies or less.

I kept the one when I sold my D800E. Oh...I think I kept the one when I sold my D800 and D7000 also, so I am covered. If I didn't have those, I think I would have purchased one. I just like the extra protection in case I'm out in some precipitation.

regretfully it will have little to no effect in precipitation as it is not a seal.

I installed and removed the BS-1 a couple times and now it fits perfectly, nice and snug, but not too much. I think the manufacturing excess (as small as it may be) just needed to wear away from the particular BS-1 I got. All is good. I rarely use a flash either, and I'm super anal, so products like the BS-1 make me feel better haha.

Another question for you guys: Do you leave the viewfinder shutter closed all the time when storing your camera? Seems like it would prevent dust from getting on the eye piece, however the shutter itself may be quite fragile.

no, I have it ready to play with. since it is a screwed on optical plate having the shutter, which is on the other side of that glass plate, no =/- effect on the eyepiece unless you unscrew it and play in the dirt. just for reference closing the shutter unlocks the ring for eyepiece removal.

I think the hotshoe cover is unnecessary and inconvenient (when you do want to pop a flash on). As others have said, it isn't water tight, but it does have the detriment that water/humidity that did get under the cover will take longer to dry compared with just leaving it off all the time. In other words, the BS-1 could entrap water on the contacts for longer.

The answer is no to your question about the viewfinder cover. I only use it with long exposures.

I did not know it was behind the viewfinder glass - I never looked at it that closely, but it did not look like it was behind the glass. I'll take a closer look when I get home today. I guess it's unnecessary if it is indeed behind the eyepiece already.
