I have a Pentax 35mm f2 Super Tak that I really like (has the same look to it) and an M85mm f2 (K mount) that is great. Not sure I'm going to get away from backwards focusing.

might as well just get the nikkor 24/2.8 or 28/2.8 AIS then instead of the FDs and fully commit to going the wrong way.

Believe me I thought about it but in the end the FD solution was supposedly better and the 20mm is very good in fact, 24mm is, ok I suppose, far better than my 24mm f2.8 K mount. My FD 24mm f2 arrives soon, I got a really good price, hoping it's better than the f2.8. I bought both thinking to keep the sharper, the f2.8 was mint, or at least until, well you know when you're sitting on the ground during a shoot and you feel a rock sticking into you, you shove it out of the way then realise it's not a rock? Yeah...

The 20mm is a real gem. There is a hard area of mush at the very edge of the lens till about f8 but it's only the last tiny big of the corners, similar to what I've seen from the Zeiss 25mm f2. Otherwise it's really good, small and not too expensive either. Only other niggle is the rotating entire front 3/4 of the lens, makes it hard to mount and not looking forward to using a polariser. It is small though and for that I forgive a lot. I know I'm going way off topic but I'd love to see what the Zeiss 18mm does on the A7r. Every example I've ever seen was either on a D800 (unfortunately not the same thing with ultra wides) or didn't have the DOF for me to really judge the corners. Even f8 isn't enough on this megapixel monster to hold the DOF front to back with most shots.

I see some of the FD 50 1.2 Aspherical in same price range as EF 50L. As the lens is not really smaller, is it really much better than EF version to justify the same price?

Not to get too off topic, but you did ask...
I have the Zeiss 18/4 (HFT in Rollei mount, same lens design as Contax). It is sharp by f/8, and respectable even wide open, on theA7r. Colors and contrast are very nice. The Zeiss look is there. Its not too big either. Another member on the forum here has posted some nice shots on the A7 thread with the Contax version. Haven't seen much about the newer ZE/ZF version on the A7r though...

If you go through the A7 etc thread you will find quiet a few of photo's made with the C/Y Zeiss D 18/4 made by me.
It matches very well on my A7r and it is one of my favourite (wide) lenses.

The shadows in the shape of an eye is by accident. (X post from the A7 thread)

Problem with web sized images are they don't say much to be honest. Do you have links to any full sized 18mm images Michiel which show DOF back to front so I can see the corners? Really appreciate it.

Thanks for the 55mm pic, um, bokeh yikes?

Seems pretty good though not any better than the FD 20mm in the corners to be honest. What aperture was it at?

I still have a 55 1.2 aspherical with the chrome mount and it is an amazing lens. I think I read and IIRC radium was used in the manufacturing process and that causes a slight yellow cast to the glass as time goes by giving a kinda warm look to the images it produces.
