pretty wild!

was it really like that, brighter inside the rainbow and much darker for the clouds just outside the rainbow? maybe the sun was beaming out of the bright center blue area and the angles to make the rainbow from that were what also lit up the clouds and it all aligned together? it looks like a special effect where you brightened inside the rainbow and darkened outside, but I guess it could be a natural beaming? pretty insane if so, not sure I've ever seen it come together in such a crazy way!

That's how rainbows are. Most people likely don't notice it in person, but it's apparent in photographs. If you do a google image search for rainbow, take a look at the photos of actual rainbows, and you'll see that the insides are brighter than the outsides.

Well, that is something most of us will never see, but thanks to your efforts, we at least get an impression of it. What a spectacular scene! Well composed and captured.

I'm no physicist, but maybe this is because the rainbow is basically the edge of a cone of light passing through watery mist or rain, and shooting towards the viewer? If that were the case, the idea that he inside of the rainbow is brighter than the outside would kind of make sense.

I hope this doesn't descend into a FM debate about how saturated it should be.

Hey Mark,

What a cool capture here of the rainbow and lightning, but I will say the shot seems to be missing some punch here. I would suggest as others have to bump up the saturation a little more.

But why jump on Craig like he is starting a saturation debate? You have said on many occasions that you invite all comments. So why get on Craig? I thought is comment was well thought out and presented.

Where is Mark "jumping on" Craig? Knowing how Mark's posts (unfortunately) turn into debates between naturalists and creationists, I too saw a possibility of this turning.

In light of the history of Mark's posts, I understand his comment and don't see how it is being perceived as negative.

Probably so, but I'd never seen it to this degree before.

First of all a sincere, huge gracious thank you for all the amazing compliments and feedback!

I was extremely fortunate to have been here on this day. Just a small handful of photographers were out there and on a few of the boards I have seen so much controversy in the comments, yet I have also found places where the Rangers who were there have said "Yep, that is what it looked like!" Photography obviously is never perfect, but we all know it can look to some degree "like" what we see (or saw) when processed somewhat conservatively. In my original / initial comment I explained what I was going after.

Yes. NO, there was no "jumping on" anyone and Craig did not think I was "jumping on" him (I respectfully sent him a message to clarify, just in case and he and I are cool)! Also I quoted him and the others, not just him... I may be the one getting jumped on, for jumping, when I did not jump, and hopefully we won't now be arguing about jumping!

Knowing how Mark's posts (unfortunately) turn into debates between naturalists and creativists, I too saw a possibility of this turning.

BTW, I changed the spelling to "creativ-ists" because this has nothing to do with the evolution / creation controversy.

But, really bad humor aside, yes that is what I hope does not happen here with the so called "camps." So far so good!

As I made clear above, I am really happy with the image. If some want to debate its saturation or "punch" level, that is fine, I will probably step aside and watch. But I will say sincerely, it is actually a great compliment to me that people are arguing that I actually under did something!!!

Restraint, yet integrity to what I (and others) witnessed was the goal and in my mind I achieved it. Pretty much most people know (that follow my work or know me personally) that I was influenced a lot by Marc A (among many others...) for years and have often liked that punchy / wow factor thing (for a lack of trying to define it here) for a long time, and I still do quite often. But, I also love the more subdued (maybe think Floris Van Brugal-ish...) yet still remaining contemporary, style as well (actually I enjoy and appreciate many styles of work). There is no perfect balance between wow factor creativeness and more subdued realism work, and then with the massive variety of tastes out there, I believe you have to ultimately figure out what you want.

Yes. Although I will say I chose the lens profile that corrected some of the lens distortion, but I allowed for the slight vignetting to remain.

Killer shot Mark and the saturation is looking pretty schweet here right where it is.
Were you shooting by yourself or was this on one of your workshops?

Dave

Thank you Dave. Actually, I had a short break between them and was behind my computer too much but keeping a very careful eye on all the weather info and reports online (that is a big part of the job). When I saw everything seemingly lining up (radar+web cams+weather reports) I just knew I had to sacrifice the business time for more shooting time. 3 AWESOME shooting days at CR and this evening made it one of those few times you hit the home run, or catch the big fish. Some may not imagine how many failures we get until the success. Prob most, if not all the photographers on this board can relate. To get more good work requires even more failures. We try to make calculated decisions for sure, but to some extent it is a numbers game...

*Lastly, I have back to back groups until the beginning of September and this image is still semi viral on the net (I have had literally into the thousands of emails/communications in 3-4 days) so I may be a little aloof for a little while until I get back to solid ground. If I happen to be a little distant, and I don't get back to some of the comments/questions quickly, I sincerely apologize in advance.

Mark - are you aware of this? http://www.opb.org/news/blog/newsblog/crater-lake-national-park-captures-amazing-rainbow-after-thunderstorm/

Too bad your crummy shot didn't go "viral" like that real photographer.

<kidding of course>

I assume the Ranger was the guy you saw, and that the "other photographer" in the article is you?
