I have been involved with this "Foolish" behavior for many years and did it again last night. I have had lightning strike within 100 feet of me three times in my life and hope they don't get any closer than that. I was a little safer from this vantage point but not by much. If you look closely in the center bolt you can see the red color from a small fire the lightning created. I could only see it burning for about a minute or so. Thankful for that.
I always enjoy your lightning images, thanks for pointing out the fire glow, it adds additional interest to the image for me. Just curious if you are using triggers and what is your preference if you do?
Thats a beauty, Klaus! I've had my close shaves with lightning in the past. I try and minimize the risk now...and that doesn't leave many opportunities. Your image has 7-10 strikes occurring in one 25 second period - wow!

Mike, Thanks and I do use a lightning trigger. This was just a long exposure w/o the trigger. The bolts were every few seconds and the light was right for the longer exposure. My preference is this one:

Thanks James and it was pretty intense. Usually bolts are about every 15-30 seconds apart.
I figure if I ever get killed by a lightning strike at least I died doing what I love

Fabulous shot, Klaus, my dear friend! So NOW I know how you do them - with a lightning trigger! Aha! I'd get one for myself but we almost never have any lightning around LA. With the exception of yesterday, when one person was killed and 20 more were sent to the hospital (one critical) when lightning struck the ocean and shore at Venice Beach. Yikes! Be careful my friend!
