This is probably the least excited I have been about getting a new camera. It sat in its box for almost a day before I pulled it out to use it, which is unheard of for me. Usually, I'm diving in with a slightly charged battery within moments of getting it.

It's funny you should say this, as I felt the same way when I was on my way to purchase mine.

The more I'm using it, the more excited I am getting though. This camera really is amazing. The AF, wow, the AF. No AF fine tune needed on any of my lenses so far. Need to test more, but was just out testing my 300mm with 2x that required +20 MA and it was bang on with my D810. Focus is fast and accurate. Shutter allows me to finally shoot hand held at much slower speeds than I was ever capable of with the D800. I was getting sharp shots last night with no VR at 1/25th second.

And that is exaclty the same way i felt as well after using it for a while!

Here is one, shot jpeg.... edited slightly in lightroom.

Excellent shot!

Sjms, those balloon shots are outstanding. Really impressive. Would you take us through the process you used from camera to website please?

more fun then impressive but thank you

there really isn't to much to these and i think is going to be rather disappointing.

my line is simple: more observation then artistry

i try to shoot and reproduce what i "see" and "perceive".

all my bodies are generally setup:
raw output
Aperture preference
single shot.
and for the most part auto ISO
min shutter spd for that day was set to 160th/s
i use a 24-120/4 most of the time for good wide and some reasonable reach.

i am constantly on the move.

i shoot media events and news so essentially i just try to get what i need in focus
when i can i do shoot to crop. this body giving me a "little" more latitude for just that,

i do not take hundreds of shots. i choose what i think may work. i do not constantly chimp. i'm still old school. if i sorta know what i'm doing so it will basically should work.

post is even simpler:
viewNX 2 into PS
in PScc 2014 right now using ACR 8.6 RC
in the case of these i use auto in ACR and then dialed back the exposure to taste
contrast tweak
slight sharpening
reduced to generally 1280 pixels on the long side to whatever on the short
web it goes.

scratch my itch

Thanks for that. Does NX2 open the D810 files? I must admit I haven't tried. Do you sharpen before reduction or after?

Thanks

No Capture NX2. It's done.
View NX2 does.

NX-D does too and its free from nikon. that is the basic replacement for Capture NX-2. in order for view NX2 to open 810 raw images you need to make sure you have the most recent update which came out about 2 weeks ago.

Interesting reading the comments here.

For once it seems the expectations of the camera body are actually being exceeded by the reality of use.

Of course, that may mean little too if the expectation bar is set way low.

Still, having such positive responses by the seasoned members here is very encouraging!

I was first in line on a list, but for once slowed down my purchasing. But really it was the lack of support for Capture NX-2 that stopped me. NX-D is not NX-2. I really was a heavy user of control points...

Still, I'll get it when their next batch comes in. I just had to up my ACR game.

Try the Nik Collection. That has all the control points. I believe the entire suite of plugins is only $149.

Thanks. I've tried NX-D and it has some nice features. I used to use Capture NX2 but it suffered from neglect on the updates I feel.

D810 and 300 f/4 make a nice combo.

Nice ISO performance looks better than the other 800s. I hated the ISO performance of my 800 it was horrible

The third duck shot of mine is iso 3600. I can't really tell the difference between that and the shots at lower iso's but those were all shot as jpeg so maybe the Expeed 4 is playing a big part there.
