Charlie Haden is/was a monster musician. I read the obit, saw this thread but just today looked at your work. His passing is like a moon setting never to be seen again.
Beautiful work here Peter.
I have been an electric bass player for going on 50+ years. My Gibson EB-1, although electric, allowed you to unscrew a cap at the bottom and screw in a pedestal to allow one to play it upright!
I loved it and have kept this to today.
Charlie was an inspiration to most musicians and especially to bass players like me.
You did 1 fantastic job here. Did BP mag ever publish these?
Dan
I just heard a wonderful airing of Terri Gross interviews with Charlie on NPR. I assume it can be streamed. One of the best things I've heard. What a remarkable, gifted man.
I may have missed it if it were not for these stellar photographs.
Those were really great glasses and were probably representative of his sense of style. The series of interviews that Terry Gross did with Charlie over the years are some of the best interviews I've heard with any creative person ever. They are particularly applicable to what we as photographers try to do when we ply our craft. They reveal a fearless artist who literally risked his freedom for his art. I can't stress enough how inspiring these interviews are when considering who Charlie was as a person and an artist. His dedication to his personal vision is something we can all learn from. The interviews moved me as much as the music. Here's a link:
Wow. Someone dug this up from how long ago. Thanks guys. Some of my favorite shots of many over several decades. I agree about the Missouri Sky record. Mesmerizing. It's just so perfect. There's also a couple of phenomenal Fresh Air interviews with Terri Gross that are a must listen for pretty much anyone interested in music in general. And of course, Charlie's daughters are pretty great musicians in their own right, with their first record being produced by Ry Cooder.
As an electric bass(standup with Gibson EB-1) session player for over 50 years, this is indeed a great loss. Your images are fantastic Peter!
I too met Charlie many years ago in New York. He was humble and a great teacher.
