Let's just say a little bird told me.
If true, wow I don't know. Is that chip able to handle 4k video reads? I guess better DR isn't totally critical for a sports/wildlife specialist cam, but it wouldn't have hurt after this long.
They better have something radically new cooked up for 5D4. Or I guess it will be A7R for many and then a shift over to Nikon. would be a real shame considering the nice Canon glass.
7D II won't get 70D sensor IMO, not in a pink fit. If it did, there is no reason for such long delay on 7D II. It could have been released 12 months ago as a tarted up 70D with better AF. 70D sensor is trailing edge sensor tech other than dual pixel for AF, but same old high read noise, low DR, shadow noise etc. It's a tad better than the 7D sensor. Completely unacceptable after waiting five years to see such pathetically small gains still being fobbed off. Canon cannot be that stupid.

Sorry, it's destined to get the 20MP chip in the 70D.
That would be a BIG disappointment for a lot of Canon users.
I have a 70D and that makes no sense to me.
Like Pixel Perfect said, why such a long wait then, they could have released it a year ago?

Some photographers may be limited by their gear. Try being a bird photographer or sports photographer and a 50mm lens being your longest lens. Or perhaps being physically limited by age or disability and needing 4 stop IS to get a sharp image. I take photos now that I never could have 25 years ago because of the technological improvements.
+1 and, whilst I may not take that many better photographs as a result of better kit, I certainly take less bad ones!

Problem is they keep putting marginal gain gear into the top sales lists. At some point you have to ask who's being stupid. Canon for releasing a pathetically small gain body or the people buying them in droves?
I really hope after all this hype and the long overdue upgrade to the original 7D, that canon comes out with something truly spectacular. Enough with passively keeping up with the rest, it's time to start leading by example.

I just bought a new SL1 (100D) from Simon's in Montreal for about $390 US (free shipping, before sales tax). Does that mean the SL2 is coming... ?
No because the SL1 was on sale for $369 around Christmas, and yet here we are!

Agree completely despite what little birds are flying around saying...
The 7D debuted at $1700 body only, and if they even keep that price, or bump it up for a 5 year infationary factor, there better substantial changes to the camera over the 70D. Just adding back in the missing 2 AF modes, increasing the buffer size and fps, etc won't remotely cover the price delta between the 7D2 and 70D.
Increasing the resolution, and providing some sort of OE dual ISO read like what Magic Lantern does, but without all the hoops, and yet another 1/3 to 2/3 stop improvement over the 70D, putting in an AF system more like the ol' 1D4, or 5D3, in addition to those other items might be enough.

Canon, like other camera makers, tends to use the same sensor in many models and distinguish them by build and other features. Pretty sure the 7D MKII will be a 70D sensor clad in magnesium with tweaked AF, FPS, buffer and, of course, Wi-Fi and GPS. If Canon wants to go hog wild they'll toss in 4K at the last minute to keep up with smartphones and P&S.
I happened to notice the sale on B&H's website and I know the new 7D II is not far away, so I made a comment, nothing more.
Interestingly, early last year the 7D price plummeted to insanely low level on staff purchase and I thought, hello, maybe this means they are running it out and something is imminent, but of course that was far from true. This time it's definitely being replaced very shortly and the price drops make sense. However, the price on staff purchase has been increasing and is now much dearer than from places like B&H and normal pricing is still $1700+ in many shops.
Interesting for me is that after going FF it is not possible to step back in IQ and become happy with a crop camera again. Sorry, but this is MY truth. If 7D II gets to the actual FF level in IQ it might be a competitor for some weeks or maybe month. After it the new sensor tech will be ported to FF and crop will stay back again. So 7D II will or might be a nice camera to play with, but it will not become a competitor to 6D II, 5D IV or 1D X MK II, except for those who need the 1.6 formfactor because they not can or do not want to pay for the large lenses.
