Or is it some weird mess since multi-layer sensor have all so far been so heavily compromised this would take a shocking level of breakthrough (but why force a weird mess out for no reason? and maybe this is why they reused the old sensors for a while, didn't feel like the expense of bothering with something intermediate and were just waiting for this ground-breaking change?).
Canon **always** targets to have Very Good+/Excellent cameras for all around, general use.
They are usually the sales leader in every niche that they are in. Big companies are conservative because they don't want to jeopardize that cash flow, which is almost a "given" for the next, replacement product.
Any project manager that undersold the previous model would get shot. (Excepting the normal market slide - Nikon interchangeable camera sales were down 30% for the 1st quarter, lens sales almost 30%, compact cameras 40%.)
This was originally scheduled for 2Q, but pushed back to 3Q. Possibly for final firmware tweaks, etc.
We were also told that this sensor would "obsolete" Canon's other current sensors. Leading to a refresh of the 5D3 and 1DX in February/March.
It would be great if we also got this sensor in an 80D and/or a 6Ti this fall yet. I really do not need 12 FPS.
I would like a higher precision auto focus system though, like the 1DX and 5D3 have. (As opposed to the slop existent in every other Phase Detect auto focus system.)

There is going to be an incredible amount of ill informed noise - speculation, whining, etc. But I really can't see Canon missing badly on the basics.
It should have great base ISO color, which will help with 80% of lower ISO images. Hopefully it also closes the DR gap.
Interesting times! It would be good to see Canon back stirring things up again.
I don't think I can wait until September 8 or 15 to hear more! Hopefully we are close to an announcement.
Canon Rumors originally said that it would be announced around August 15. I think that is when the Canon 1DsII was announced (with the 20D about 3 -4 weeks later I think?)
How about 7Dxxx or better yet the 7Dddd, Canon's new wonder tech, it sees through everything, even into deep space, the final frontier, oh yeah, full light spectrum enabled

Are you joking? What limb? Are you going to sue a rumor site if their rumors are not facts?
Why would he risk it? Why would he say so much about how this stuff is 100% if he has no clue and dried up rumors? Wouldn't that sink the site's credibility totally at this point?

I wouldn't bet the farm on these specs having any credibility let alone a "given". If these latest specs are close to reality, then count on this body to be north of $3,000.
Well if they don't pan out than he just utterly blew any credibility and use for his rumors for good.

Given the rumors this is essentially a successor to the 1D crop body. Even at $3500 it's $1500 less then what those used to be and half the price of a 1DX. I do hope Canon introduces a CFast slot with it if it's upwards of $3000. That would give it some staying power going forward. A 1DX battery (or a potential 1DX2 battery) would be awesome for compatibility between the two high FPS bodies.
Well, we will know soon enough what is going on. Personally, if they did nothing but put in the 5D3 AF that would make me happy. Everything else is a bonus.
All this talk attributed to a Canon sales rep is BS. I've been in camera retail, off and on, since the late '70's. I've known reps from all the major camera and lens manufactures since then and at best, they are briefed about a week before the introduction of the new model.
The one notable exception to this was the introduction of the Minolta Maxum 7000. Reps were told weeks in advance because of the truly revolutionary nature of the features (AF). I doubt the 7D replacement will be that revolutionary to the industry, but I hope it is.

Although it is possible he totally mixed up multi-layer exposure metering sensors with imaging sensors and also forgot that they already have that for exposure metering....

Keep in mind that this site is all speculation and rumors. The site doesn't have to be credible. People frequent the site just to discuss what's possible. The CR guy might know a bit more but all his rumors are from other sources.

You seem to miss the point that rumor sites do not need credibility. He gets advertisers and visitors regardless of the credibility of his rumors.
Deja Vu all over again. I remember very well 5 years ago this same time the rumors, speculation, and doubts superseding the 1D mark IV's introduction. My dream camera materialized and I bought it. And still have it. The 7DII will finally materialize as such very shortly as the 1D Mark IV's true replacement. Very exciting times isn't it?

Really exiting times, am a big fan of the 7D
I would be happy if they improved the AF, mine struggles in a few situations but it's mostly excellent for what I do, but improvements would be welcome
A better sensor would be great again for what I do the current sensor is good but just sometimes it would be handy to be able to go to very high ISO
Everything else on the current camera is good I don't need any more FPS
