For those of you that may not know, Proxy Falls is over 200 feet tall. I'm not sure that there is a perspective that will allow a normal wide angle lens to take in the entire falls in one image. The forest is too overgrown as you get away from it and I'm not sure the perspective would be an interesting one. But those of you that are more familiar with the area may know better than I. When I wasn't trying to get "unlost" I probably only spent an hour trying to get images.:-)
I am looking at the most beautiful and dramatic Proxy Falls i have seen. Gorgeous!
Yes, I too was reading your story with so much anxiety but 'omg' you are okay.
Carl's story is as much scary as well.
Thanks for sharing your photos and story.
I am scheduled to be heading out to Bend area this September. I love to venture into this falls as well.
But after I had so much trouble at the False Kiva.. I am not 100% sure of my hikings.. any more, especially I am a lone hiker.
Take care!
ps; My strong preference is the very first photo!!

Kee - thanks so much for the praise, I really think others have done much better than I.
And if you are a good hiker, please do consider Proxy. The hike itself is not really that bad. Just remember that when you park at the trailhead there are actually two routes to the falls. If you take the left one, it is much shorter and easier (maybe 2/3rds of a mile). You will get to a sort of a clearing area that has a long sitting log that gives a full view of the falls in the distance. Just past that area (it was kinda overgrown when I was there) is the (not long) switchback trail down to the base. It isn't really that bad. The important thing is when you get to the bottom, don't be dumb like me and fail to notice where/how you came out in relation to the falls. Those downfall trees really do a good job of concealing the trail, so its easy not to see it coming back (at least it was for me...... But the hike isn't bad at all.
Of greater concern to me would be the condition of the greens in September. I don't know. Not sure about fall foliage there. You will have to get some local knowledge for that. I don't know, so I can't help you out on time of year info.
Hope you have a great time there. I certainly did. And I would love to go back. Time will tell.
Jim,
I'm glad things worked out for you and and I hope your wife wasn't to stressed out.
The images are beautiful and you have an exciting story to with them
Glad you made it back safely. Beautiful images. Got lost once in Valley of Fire after shooting the wave. Panic set in a bit but started retracing my steps. Took me an extra half hour to figure it out.
