p.1 #1 · Urban Portrait Series - downtown Chicago w/dancers
Hey everyone,
I think I actually didn't shoot an Urban Portrait Series in 2013, which is really weird for me. My goal was to shoot at least one a month once it warmed up in 2014 and this past week, I got to shoot this year's first one with two dancers from Ballet Chicago. It was fun to get back into an urban setting, which was the roots for this series when it started five years ago. Just got word over the weekend that I'll be doing my second gallery show with this series in September. Now just have to find time to do more of these summer to prep for the show.

Thanks, John, Wildcats_Fans, rongwam and Steady!
John, yeah, I really wanted more separation in No. 1 with the dancers from the background. They were jumping on these little stones, so we were pretty limited as to where they could jump, and I didn't have them away enough from that ivy-filled wall.
Steady, yes, I've been doing this series for a number of years now (aside from last year). And yes, I do take it as a compliment, as you intended. Always hoping my work gets better year by year. Your faves are my faves as well.

Nice work, Ron! I agree that the "Bean" and the one after, with less background busyness are most appealing, to my eye. Where in Chicago are the garden photos shot?

Thanks, Sharona! 1-5 are shot on the SW side of The Art Institute building, I just love shooting there! No. 6 is shot at the Millennium garden, between the Pavillion and the Art Institute. Are you in Chicago?

Great series - very well done.
Number 10 has a very different mood for me - looks more like it was taken in a studio. That certainly isn't meant to have a negative implication. I'm just observing the mood feels different for me. All very well done. Thanks for sharing.

Hi guys, thanks! Since you mentioned No. 10 and that it's different, that's what I was going for. The other shots were during daylight and meant to be colorful, fun, and lively. This one, the sun was down and we were in a back alley behind a theatre. I wanted to create a really moody image with a dancer under the Stage Door sign. Shot with two speedlights, I was pretty happy with how it came out.

Great series, Whats not to love about any of them? I really like the firsts and the third. I like number 4 but feel 3 is stronger because of her hair color. That contrast of color really makes that one pop! Thanks for posting!
