I like the series, but 8 really bugs me. Feels like a weird gaussian blur application to me. Given the angle of her face I bothers me because her mouth should be in about the same focus plane as at least one of her eyes. Since both eyes, her nose, and the veil are all tack sharp, the depth of field is huge --- which makes the amount of blur on the mouth and chin seem far out of whack. Also the blur on the veil makes no sense when you have the closest part of the veil sharp, and blur parts that are between that closest part and her eyes. Since the eyes are sharp, all of the that veil has to be sharp as well. Finally, the amount of blur on the mouth and chin creates an impression that they must not even be part of her face --- like two images were joined at the bottom of the veil. Maybe a vignette would work better to isolate the eyes....Show more →
Thanks for the thoughts! That was free lensed, much like tilting with a tilt/shift lens (all intentional), where it skews the entire focus plane forward. More info:
Great set of images there. I really, really like no.8, but then I have a thing for shallow DOF images with little more than the eyes in focus. Free-lensing has put the focal plane in just the right place to get both eyes in focus, which gives a really surreal look to the image. Awesome!
