Although called "Queen of the River" by Izaak Walton, the common carp is much maligned due to having a name similar to the destructive Asian carp and due to its bottom feeding tendencies. However, I can assure you that, as a sportsfish and pound for pound, the common carp has few peers relative to its fight and strength. The photo isn't all that artistic, but the joy is genuine.
The fish was caught and released, unscathed. It was gently placed in a padded weighing sling (foreground), and weighed via the tripod and scale (background). Then, the prize carp was quickly slipped back into the lagoon (which has direct access to Lake Michigan). --Frank
