This is a prime example of what a lot of those uber technical/special effects photographers will learn someday when scratching their heads as to why they were denied contest by an image that was perceived to them inferior in terms of framing, sharpness, and lighting.
An AMAZING photo doesn't always need to be executed with rules of guideline perfection, but how a story examples immersively through a captivating gesture.
Reason for it being so compelling, is that the emotions invoke such a response of genuineness--which the innocence in the lil girl's eyes reflect.
Maybe a bit of noise reduction and less tonal variation would definitely graduate this to Nat Geo quality. I would know  .
