p.2 #1 · Got the Dreaded "Err" message on my new D4s

I just got the "ERR" Error on my D4 as well. The mirror is stuck in the up position and the curtain and stuck over the sensor. If I shoot in "live view" it works, once I take it out of live view the curtain goes back over the sensor and mirror stuck. I changed the battery, cleaned contacts, to to avail. Sending it in today.

p.2 #2 · Got the Dreaded "Err" message on my new D4s

I had a variation of this problem on one of my D3s bodies. Err message in middle of a burst. Only had ~ 35k actuations. If I pressed the shutter release again it would resynch with a sound like the mirror was returning. After two trips to Nikon (luckily I live 10 minutes away) with various adjustments the trouble kept returning. I contacted and met with NPS and reproduced the problem on site. Received a loaner D4 with the agreement I would return it when they had found and replaced the offending part. They replaced the aperture lever and it has been perfect ever since. I had cleaned camera and lens contacts even though I never believed that to be the cause.

It's hard to believe that most of you guys haven't heard about this issue somewhere on the web: http://camyx.com/news/2014/03/nikon-d4s-card-issues-lexar/

If you're running firmware version 1.01, you've got some updating to do. Nikon's current firmware update for C is now at 1.10. This update is supposed to take care of the err problem that's coming from certain Lexar CF cards. Lexar also has a recall program for certain cards that you should probably read. I believe it's in the service link above.

"Err" and "CArd [Err]" are two different messages with two different causes.

Better to send it to Nikon. Doesn't sound like card writing related error (in that case, the error message would say "CArd"). Could be some mechanical issue (like some issue with aperture lever and/or lens mount mechanism, or shutter).

Personally I would try to get a replacement camera. You didn't pay all that money for Nikon to be taking your camera apart after 6 weeks. The camera has issues that should not be happening to a brand new D series pro body. Part of the high price of the pro bodies is reliability which you are not getting.

Another culprit is the Aperture indexing ring.
Is it possible that Nikon is slacking in the manufacturing of the mechanical aperture coupling and indexing components?

I bought a used D3 and with G lenses it would work at first, I then mounted an Ai-S lens, wentthrough the stops on the aperture ring and 4 of the positions did not register. With the Ai-S lens I only got an Err message from that lens. None of my D lenses would work and after some trying around none of my G lenses worked either.

Just got a text from a buddy of mine who is working an event today.

http://www.dukedixon.com/photos/i-Sm5F9vL/0/L/i-Sm5F9vL-L.jpg

He has had is D4s for about 10 days now with 3000 clicks or so on the shutter. Going by my own experience from when it happened to me, I told him to pull the battery and remove the lens and let it sit for a couple of hours.

Other than that I don't know what else to tell him, any body else have any ideas?

He is going to return it to B&H for a swap, but its Saturday and that will not happen until Monday when they open back up.

Glad he has his back up body but dang!
