I have used (SPP - TIF - DarkTable) from time to time.
It has a bit of a learning curve, however it is free.
And I have liked some of the BW's it has produced, Other wise I mainly use Lightroom.

I find that Silver Efex in CS6 works best for me.

Thanks for the comments. I will take a look at these. I typically use SPPcolor - tif - Lightroom for my conversions. Although I like the overall look of the monochrome conversions in SPP it seems to lose detail compared to the color output. Anyone else notice this?

@brendans.......Great images and really enjoyed reading your blog. Are your monochrome conversions in SPP or Lightroom? I had trouble coming up with a good workflow with the Merrill files. The monochrome conversion in SPP appears to smooth over the details and the image loses something.

Thanks Edwin. Probably 80% of the time I convert in LR from a color tif from SPP. As long as you have the noise reduction all the way off, I don't feel like you lose any details in monochrome. You do get a pretty flat conversion, so there's lots of room for curve adjustments. For most photos exposure, curves and blacks/whites gets me where I want. I love the Merrill monochrome conversions quite a bit more than anything (digital) that I've used.

Great photos Julian...The colors are great, especially in the macro flower shots. How did you process them?
Thank you. From raw and SPP I usually use CS6 . I do play with the colours, adjust each for tones and hue. I personally try to avoid any contrast adjustments, as software contrast as a opposed to the contrast a lens gives an image can crush the colours. For any form of contrast I can at time use the a graduation layer, set to luminosity and fade it , that can achieve a contrast that is more subtle. But really within the parameters it is ideal to start afresh each image as, each needs to be handled on it's own merit.
I wrote somewhere here on FM in either this thread or the DP2 thread a bit more about how I deal with colours.
