There is a pack of wolves near snaring river that range into Patricia Lake. But I have not seen a black wolf in their pack. Last year I stood in the middle of the pack. I suspect that this guy is associated with the pack. There are warning signs in Patricia Lake to keep the animals on the leash or the wolves will pick them off.
Thanks for sharing. I need to get back to Jasper to look for wolves. Scott
Ron - I was fortunate to get quite close. It was quite a thrill to see it. Thanks, Mark.
Scott - I was told by a park officer they think this individual may be the sole surviving member of the Signal pack. What an amazing area for wildlife and landscape! I hope to get back there one day before long. Thanks for your comment! Cheers, Mark.
Ed - it was an added bonus seeing the animal in the snow. Thanks! Mark.
Olivia_ttn - the eyes definitely get your attention. I was impressed by how easily it seemed to trot through the snow and the speed at which it could move, also by the sheer size of the animal. Thanks, Mark.

From valley sentinel and jasper environmental- it sounds like you are right. The pack has either been killed off by other wolves or has moved up the Maligne lake road. I am hoping for the latter.
Thanks for the information - I will have to inform my beloved that there is some shiny new jewelry available only in jasper.
Very nice results! So, 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4x TC = 420mm?
Also, did you find the wolf to be intimidated by your presence? I wonder if there had been a pack, would it have been even more dangerous to photograph without a larger focal length? It is always a risk with wolves given their ability to charge very quickly.
