Betel nut, but it is the lime that they mix with it that makes it so red (not lime like in the fruit, lime like in the rock).
Standard practice is to wrap the betelnut in its leaf, along with the lime powder and often tobacco from a cigarette.
You can see what it does to their teeth. In one of the photos, there is a young lady sorting the green betelnuts. They then get unshelled and eaten in small pieces - held in the mouth like a chewing tobacco.
Have you tried them? An incredibly bitter taste! Like chewing tobacco for the first time user, chewing betel nut often results in a bad stomach ache. But very popular among most of the islands and areas in the South Pacific.

No I didn't tried them. My friend told me that he tried and it was disgusting.
Anyway even I was curious how it's taste I was afraid to try just because of possible stomach problems.
