It was a frigid afternoon at Mono Lake. About ten minutes after sunset, there were no colors in the sky. I was pretty tired from driving and was thinking about packing my gear and head out...
While talking to a fellow photographer, I noticed her face started to get a color glow. The pinkish dusk colors suddenly took over that section of the sky and luckily I had my gear and composition already set-up. It didn't last much because of the heavy clouds accompanying the setting of the sun right behind us but gave me enough time for two captures.
The first was focused on the immediate rocks in the foreground and the other on the distant "Tufas".
Taken with the Sony A7R and Canon TS-E 17mm f/4. (f/9, 2.5s exposure). The lens was shifted down about 5mm and no filter was used.
I hope you like it. Comments and feedback appreciated.

i love those sleeper sunsets that have you all ready to give up on and a scene and then BAM! the sky comes back to life one last time. sweet story and great shot
That is so true Killersnowman. I always try and wait around long enough after the sun sets because I have missed a lot of these types of shots because I get in a hurry to get home thinking the show is over. It actually is quite amazing how long it takes for some of these shots to appear after the sun sets.
I find that getting a really good image at Mono Lake is pretty tough. Wish the sky would have been more dramatic (it is good as is though) but the composition is really clever. I like it. There are a lot of nice subtleties in the image in regards to color and elements.
I am missing a bit of the High Sierras in the distance. It is a significant part of what makes this location just breathtaking.
Technically the image is superb as is usual for you Fred!
How cool. It pays to be aware and to not pack up to soon. I really like the composition and the color. Sneaky has an interesting thought, but it's funny in all the years I have shot Mono Lake, the tufa's and the clouds/colors have driven my compositions not the Eastern Sierra.
Great colors. Always pays to stay behind but I get sometimes we all get frustrated when we don't get the sunset we had hoped for. These surprise ones are always a great feeling!
Fred, gorgous shot. I have noticed you are posting a fair bit with A7r and your TS lenses. Do you think this is a novelty compared to your canon, or has the Sony become your camera of choice for landscape (best of both worlds, 36mp sony sensor with no low pass filter, and Canon TS goodness?)
Fred,
That new camera in your hands is really special! The images you post from it are really outstanding. This image is really fine! The colors, the exposure...all "right on".
Well done!
Dan
