p.1 #1 · Has anyone deal with HISCOX photography insurance?
Received something in the mail from HISCOX and gave them a call. They say they specialize in tailored coverage for photographers and small businesses. I currently use Hill & Usher and I'm paying $900/year. HISCOX is at $500/year for a similar policy. The only issue seems to be they only cover up to $10k in gear "taken outside of the home/studio"... this is basically my 1DX and one lens. Looks like a $500 deductible on claims. I thought it was weird that he said I didn't need to itemize all my gear-no serial numbers, no photos or receipts. So just wondering if anyone uses these guys? I've never made any claim on an insurance policy but I need to know if I ever do that I will taken care of in a timely manor.
Below is their online advertisement. I received a similar mailer.

no helpful info, but I knew some people would have to have fun with the name so I had to peek to see if I was right, and I was
I am with Marsh and have been for years, no claims, you do itemize your list and they don't pose the same limit as you mentioned, not aware of any limits to how much you can cover, you pay according to the value of your equipment. they also offer liability as well.

Thanks Sheri. I'd like to have about about $25k coverage for my itemized gear and basic liability for my business. If this sounds similar to what you have could you give me a rough idea of what your premium at Marsh. Do you have a contact over there?

I use Photocare (the one that comes with PPA membership). So far, I never needed to claim anything.
It's pretty cheap (it's actually free with PPA membership, up to 15k) and I didn't need to itemize all my gear.

Who has a contact person at Marsh? What do you pay per year for gear coverage + basic liability? HISCOX definitely seems to be a bare bones policy and I wouldn't feel confident in them god forbid if I ever had to make a claim.

I think he is talking more about the liability coverage, no? The included PPA insurance is only for equipment.

You might want to take a look at PPA.
I originally had their free $15k policy as part of the membership, but it just wasn't good enough. You don't get the same replacement value as a scheduled policy. I now have the scheduled policy with $15k scheduled and another $3500 misc, I also have 1m/2m liability and indemnification insurance. Deductibles are $250 not sure what liability deductible is.
So all together I pay about $1000 (adding in the membership fee) for all of this and get the other benefits of PPA, discounts, templates, forms, etc.

I don't have my info on me ATM, but there is another thread here that already discusses rates in depth.

Guys, I'm in a pretty unique situation with this thread, b/c for my full-time work, I'm the owner and agent of an insurance brokerage in Dallas, and Hiscox is one of the companies I represent on the commercial side of things.
OP, the policy you probably got an advertisement for is a very specialized general liability (GL) policy with additional coverage available for gear, business property, E&O, rental coverage, etc. And it's specifically underwritten just for professional or semi-pro photographers. It starts off with a very basic GL policy, and you can add whatever you want to customize exactly the coverage you need, and not have to pay for something that isn't relevant for your situation.
It's a very comparable product to what Hill & Usher offers. As soon as my (pre-paid) policy with them expires later this year, I'll be making the switch to Hiscox.

1-800-588-7518, don't have any names, but they are VERY helpful when you call
I think my liability is $320, this may vary depending on where you are located. Your equipment coverage will be based on value before I updated my value on my equipment list I think I was at about $400, if you give them a call they will give you a quote. Before PPA changed things, Marsh was their ins. provider which is where I picked them up. I had called the new co. to ask about their coverage and even though I have opted in with the new PPA equipment coverage, I still decided to stick with Marsh and of course anything not listed on my itemized policy may be covered by my PPA equipment coverage depending on circumstances since they don't cover as well.

My coverage is through Hill & Usher for the past three years. I spent 20 years in the Surplus Lines insurance market as a claims manager. Hiscox is is well know Lloyd's Brokerage and is one of several that have opted for a US presence due to the shifting insurance landscape and the financial market. While your initial cost may be lower, you may find that policies written through the non-standard markets have many exclusions, limitations and restrictions that you may not realize until you file a claim. Many are ACV (actual cash value, think cost minus depreciation minus deductible), rather than RCV (replacement cost, think cost of new or like kind and quality minus deductible). My studio coverage runs a little over $600 per year for 1M/2M general liability, 78k indemnity for errors and omissions, and 24K camera gear plus other non-scheduled limits for office equipment, computer equipment, etc and does cover me off premise for property and liability. I can also quickly get a certificate of insurance immediately for any venue that might require it. Regardless of the source, read your policy. The time for surprises is not when a loss occurs!
