A 4 X 4 is a requirement along with the $70 permit....add another $20 and it allows you to drive the Maryland side of Assatague Island (not the state park of the island though). You need to have a tow strap, 1 1/2 thick pieces of wood to support a jack, a jack (what comes with your truck is fine) and a shovel at least 6" wide at the tip. The Hook is about 2 1/2-3 miles from the beach entrance and the furthest you can drive is about 4.4 miles if you continue on. 50% of the Owls I've found at Chincoteague (10 total on different days) were right where the island starts turning and the other 50% were either in the 2 beach parking areas or close to them....well within walking distance from where you can park. ...Show more →
Thanks Duane. I don't have a 4x4 so I hiked a little past the furthest you can drive today and didn't have any luck. I was thinking it was going to be a bust for me but on the way back approximately 1 mile from the sand parking area I ran into my first Snowy Owl! It was pretty skittish so I couldn't get too close but I'm not complaining.

Awesome Duane! Thanks for sharing. I hope some day to make it out there.....
Thanks a lot. Just be warned...don't expect to see one if you go out there. The one thing I've learned about the Owls at Chincoteague is they're not always there so if you go give yourself a few trips up there to actually see one. It's about a 50% chance of seeing one for me there and I think I've made 14 trips to Chincoteague so far. These Owls move around at night and have a lot of beach to rest on up and down the coast.
