Great and out of the ordinary composition that plays to the strengths of the wide angle while avoiding its weaknesses for a portrait.
Great lighting for showing his athletic form.
When you shoot wide like that, you have to understand how the distortion is going to work and how it will impact your shot. If those hands came up higher, the distortion would really make them larger than they should be. But because you brilliantly shot them with the hands lower, you don't really see the distortion effect. I think it's a fabulous shot! Great job!

The pose had to be just right as you mentioned for it to work. Not only the hands but also the head.
