p.1 #1 · Portrait of my wife - color or not? (REVISIONS ADDED)

Which do you like better? B&W or color?

I shot these pictures of my wife right after my sister's wedding last weekend. Leica M240 with a Summilux ASPH 50mm at f/1.4.

I prefer the b&w. but not by a whole lot.

Given the right WB and lighting, I would prefer the color version.

I would say that the BW version has a more timeless look to it.

Tones are not great for black and white, colors are vibrant.

If you burned the left of the frame so that it was darker, the B&W version may work better. The light tones on the left compete with the light tones on her face in B&W.

Color absolutely. But it's lit by incandescent bulb and far too yellow. Need to adjust in Hue saturation and get that yellow out a bit. Or if using something like LR, adjust for the yellows various ways. Then the garment, gold and especially her eyes and skin tone will be beautiful.

Of the two I prefer the B&W but would really like to see some color correction because the colors are what I want to see.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback. In response, I've made a few changes to each image, and have reposted here. Medowlark, Rajitev and Georgiegirl, I take your criticism of the yellow tungsten cast, and adjusted the image as below.

Bryanlindsey, I see what you are saying re: compositional competition in the tones to the right. I've dialed them back a bit... would be interested to see if you like the revisions better.

The revisions are much better. Still think that you needed a bit more fill light on the left side of her face or some diffusion on the main light source. The contrast is to harsh from the right to left side of her face. Fix that and the B&W version would be great. The color one still seems to have a bit too much yellow still, but a vast improvement to the original. She is a lovely model.

Much better! I would hesitate to be more precise about your wife's skin tone...

The revised color version is my favorite of the bunch. I am not sure how much latitude the m240 has in the dark areas but I would try to lift the shadows just enough to be able to better resolve the difference between pupil and iris in your wife's eyes.
