I still "send out" for my prints.

Me too. I am not prepared to carry the burden and investment of printing gear. I'd rather work with a pro lab.

Printing gear really isn't that much of an investment, depending on how big you print... I love the immediate gratification. My Epson 3880 was about $800 and came with $400 worth of ink, and that was three years ago.

Finally, all this is fun to talk about, but really has no necessary connection to what one buys for photography.

When mirroring the cost of development and marketing of models such as RX1 and A7/r on this background, and then considering the projected net profits from sales of these models, I can't help but look at Sony in awe and wonder.

Are they are even dreaming of breaking even? What more do they have up their sleeves?

If I had endless funds, I would surely buy an RX1 just as a token of appreciation for creating it in the first place.

Or everyone's standards are lowered to the phone cameras and no one needs the expensive "capable" camera photos. After all, do these expensive camera photos really look any better on Facebook?

Better cameras don't mean better photos. I have frineds who went from a PS to a DSLR and now to their phones because they did not see an improvement in their photos: holding a pencil doesn't make one an artist, so why carry a big pencil?

To be honest though, even though we all agree that phones are not comparable to dedicated cameras, even from the lot of us here, how many of our photos are taken with our phones, compared to our other gear? I probably shoot 5 to 1 on my phone -partly because I learned the cost of film in my school days and kept the notion of making the shots count -old dogs and new tricks and all that

I don't take photos with my phone, I have it to speak to others. I think that one should use the proper tool for a specific activity and I start having a problem with these new phones that either cost too much for a phone, or have a lot of functions, but have problems with the speakers, sensibility, software and so on. Really, singing the praise of such a thing is for me the win of marketing over reason.

I used to take more photos with my iPhone, but I am barely ever doing it now, and never important/creative stuff.

Someone said the best photograph is the one you can take.
So if you've got a cell phone & a moment happens, you can record it.
Invaluable to the grandparent crowd (yes I am)

I think the cell phone/camera has most P&S cameras beat.
My iPhone 5s has great IQ in good light/modest contrast & decent ISO/dynamic range.
Not quite up to my Canon S95 though.
I also use my iPhone for "bookmarking" a scene I'm taking with film.
And of course I get the GPS coords, notes on the shot & a zone system app.
So to me the cell phone is just a tool. Sort of like Swiss Army knife, but not the finest cutlery.

I hope the mirrorless camera type survives in the market. I think it offers a great alternative
I interested in getting one for traveling light yet still good image making.

Besides, my current camer inventory is 3 film (35mm/6x7/4x5) & only two digital (s95 & 5DMkII).
So a mirrorless would event out the score

I personally keep the shopping list on my phone ;P

Between my kids, my social life, work and what have you, the phone has become an indispersable "documenting" tool; kindly note "documenting" -to that, its the perfect tool.

For the rest of the times, I have a Fuji X100 in my bag. Sure, I won't be able to catch that F-16 in flight but, oh well, I'll have to make do

Just wait until your kid's first F16 flight. Then you'll regret dumping the old DSLR

somehow the whiteboard seems much more effective for coordinating shopping lists with my wife.

my phone camera doesn't seem to be up to the task of documenting anything social or with my kid. at least not in a way that the people are recognizable. i think it would be better suited for studio or landscape work.

Always learn something new in this forum

I did took some photos with my new Nokia 1520, as I found out I left my camera bag at home. But I always document my family out. In the end, I got some good memory and some interesting pictures which I won't even think to made with my main camera. This give me some new perspective and confirm different tool can give different results. (I will post some phone pic in the thread here later. )

all is lost already at that point. the phone is good for asking the other person to look at the white board and send a picture of it, but if neither of us is home neither of us can remember what we need. also, having a shared list online results in both of us being too lazy to add anything to it. the effort to write something on the whiteboard seems much lower than to take out a phone and type something in when we think of it.

You don't like aviation photos? Check some of these. It's a great thread.

Actually, I love aviation photos. Thanks for the pointer. The irony of my comment was that a big branch of my family actually do happen to be fighter pilots...

I also managed a few pretty good shots of the blue angels at SF Fleet Week a few years ago with the humble Panny G3 and 100-300mm lens. Certainly not as reliable as a DSLR would've been, but much easier to schlep around all day. Plus, mirrorless AF and EVFs have of course improved since then.
