As many have realized that live on the East Coast we have seen an unusual amount of Snowy Owls in areas they're not normally seen. I set out this year to see and photograph my first one and after coming up empty my first few outings I finally saw my first one a few weeks ago and managed some distant shots of it.
1. My very first view and photograph of a white ghost. Uncropped at 1050mm focal length.
The next day I went back up to Assateague and didn't see anything. A week after my first sighting I returned to Assateague but I didn't get my hopes up after my previous trip. As I rounded the sand dunes and the beach flattened out I saw something off into the distance on a piece of driftwood.
7. I returned Christmas Eve for a half day but came up empty. Christmas Day I brought a friend with me hoping she would see one for her first time. We found 2 Snowies Christmas Day but only photographed one of them.
I returned yesterday with 3 other people and we found 3 different Snowy Owls on a 5 mile stretch of beach. 2 were very cooperative and the other was skittish se we left that one alone on the beach.
8. The light yesterday morning wasn't great but we got to watch a Snowy Owl drink from a pond.
13. I never thought I'd be able to watch the sunset with a Snowy Owl in the foreground. This is not how I saw the image I was after in my head with the sunset but I'll take it....for now.
A wonderful set including some decent behavioral captures. The story line kept my interest. Patience and perseverance are the wildlife photographers watch words built on a foundation of knowledge and experience. You exhibit it in this set.
Great set Duane! Was there yesterday afternoon when I shot mine. I love the owl in fight as that's the hardest to get especially with the lighting showing their yellow eyes.
Thank you everyone. For me I think there's a story behind every image so I like to say what was going on or what led up to images I share.
These are amazing raptors and each one has a personality from what I've noticed. I'm thankful to be able to see and photograph them....we may never get another opportunity like this in our lifetime.
Terrific set Duane! #4 is my fave. Great takeoff shot. The drinking sequence is neat. Never seen a pc of any owl drinking before. Thanks for heading out so many times to get these images.
