p.1 #1 · Electronic vs mechanical first curtain

Hello guys,

So what are the advantages/disadvantages of both?

Electronic first curtain advantages may include less vibration, quieter sound, less shutter lag, anything else?

Are there any disadvantages?

Thanks!

Current implementations of EFSC have ghosting at high shutter speeds, at least on the NEX-5N. This is mentioned in the NEX-5N manual. Here is an image demonstrating this - look for the horizontal line at the center of the frame:

Jello effect on still when one is panning?

I believe that only occurs with full electronic curtains, when the read-out of the sensor creates rolling shutter effects. Having just a first curtain electronic avoids this because the reset of the sensor at the start of an exposure occurs very fast.

Thank you snapsy and aleksander. So it is preferable to use the mechanical 1st curtain at high speeds, but perhaps use the electronic one on tripod and slow shutter speeds to reduce shutter induced vibrations?

Yep, I think this is good advice.

I have been eyeing the A7 threads extensively, but I'm really at a loss with this whole curtain thing> I understand leaf shutters (like in a 500 series) and regular shutters, like in a DSLR.

Is there a page that some of you kind folk can direct me to understand what the differences and benefits of both electronic and mechanical shutters?

Why do electronics shutters exist in the first place? There must be a gain to it, isn't there?

Thanks.

The other problem is uneven exposure at 1/2000 and higher. Here's an A7 at 1/5000. The strong vignette on the right is due to the EFCS.

Guari - an electronic first-curtain shutter means that the shutter is open, then when you press the shutter button, the sensor is "blanked" electronically (all the built-up charge is dumped), then at the end of the exposure the physical shutter is closed and then the sensor is read out.

It means an extremely short shutter lag, as the picture begins to be taken almost instantly. And less noise/vibration overall, as the shutter only activates once.

Thanks Taylor. I think I will stick to mechanical 1st curtain except for critical tripod work.

Thank you all guys, most helpful

And I take that one of the A7 (not sure which) has the electronic shutter option while the other doesn't have it?

Thanks again

The A7 has it. The A7R always has the double-*clunk*.

I found with the NEX-7 that I generally liked EFCS for the lower noise & vibration, but I also tended to keep the shutter speed at 1/1000 or below.

I'd turn it off when I was shooting action or when I was trying to shoot wide open in good light.

I never had to turn mine off on the NEX-7, and I never seen dark corners caused by it.

While I do really like my new A7r, if Sony or somebody else released tomorrow a camera of the same specifications but with an All-electronic shutter ( free of ghosting or vigneting ) I'd swap at once.
The noise/vibrations and shutter delay of the A7r, as well as the short battery life, are IMO the only black spots of this camera.

I too left it on all the time on the NEX-7. I did see the uneven exposure on a few frames with very short shutter speeds, but only sometimes. Having a shorter shutter lag far outweighed that slight disadvantage for me.
