p.1 #1 · My new (handmade) camera strap for my DF!

Hey guys, I posted this on another forum but thought I'd post it here too...

So after searching for a long time for a new camera strap I came to the conclusion I really liked both of the artisan and artist silk rope and easy slider straps that I've seen a few others post about on some other boards... what I didn't like about the straps, though, were the prices. Even at the cheapest places the straps together would have cost me over $200. Now, don't get me wrong, I do own a artisan and artist strap (the basic cloth strap) and the quality is excellent but this time around I didn't feel like shelling out what is essentially the cost of a point and shoot camera, especially when I already had straps that worked. I know people will say that spending the extra money on quality is worth it for an expensive camera and I'd tend to agree BUT in my case I already have some nice straps that I've bought but was just looking for something different to use for a while.

Anyway, after looking through a ton of pictures and debating on whether or not to spend the $$ I took a look around my house and realized that I basically had everything I needed to make my own straps! So after a little planning off I went to grab some stuff around the house to get started. Below are some pics of what I ended up with. I know the stitching is a little sloppy but I did it quickly and was more concerned with triple stitching every stress point to ensure that the ropes and strap would not ever come loose. If I ever make more of these I'll have to work on getting that better...

In any case, I just wanted to share these creations with you to let you all know that it's not hard to make your own if you have the time and patience! Let me know what you think!

The best part about these straps is that I really only paid for the awl I used to stitch these together and while the quality is not the same as the artisan and artist straps at least I saved some money and actually found that making them was kind of fun to do in my spare time. Next time around I may look in to finding some silk ropes or at least some strap that isn't made out of nylon. These will do for now though.

Thanks for looking!

"Slider Strap" on my DF - made from nylon climbing strap and old leather belt, slides and fully adjustable up to 57"

"Rope" strap on my X100s - made from old climbing rope, mcgizmo ss clips, and old leather belt, about 37" long

Wrist strap without a camera home yet - made from old climbing rope and same old leather belt used in other straps

Slider and Rope strap together on each camera

I like them!

I'm still waiting for Nikon to release the leather case and straps for the Df.

Thanks! I really like how they turned out!

Yeah I saw the Nikon leather case on ebay but the prices are outrageous right now... I'll wait for a third party most likely and continue to use my op/tech neoprene case for now, which works just fine.

Nice, the one you made for the X100S looks very similar to one I bought from Lance. Simple and effective.

Oh I've never heard of lance straps. They look nice. Giving me more ideas for my next project.

tangfj..

Good work... I too doctor most of my own straps to suit what I need.

I have to warn you though... Those 'lanyard-style' hooks are not very strong they are deceptivley thin and can easily break with the weight of a camera. Unfortunately there is NOTHING in this world that is a suitable alternative.
Thanks for the pics

Yeah I was a bit worried abou the lanyard clips. I've seen other people who crimp the end of the clips to make them more secure. I may end up going with ball bearing swivels instead since they'd be more durable.

To each their own I suppose... the style is not for everyone but I like them.

It was more gratifying making my own rather than buying... I have other straps as well so these are just in the rotation.

You laid your cameras down on a cement type surface! Gulp.

Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing when I took the shots. I did it VERY VERY carefully! The floors at my house are finished cement and was the best quick backdrop I could find around the house.

At a price probably equal to Nikon's grip for the D800 you might stop waiting!

Looks like it's going to be $249 for the case and an additional $69 for matching strap. I don't know for sure if the strap is included with the case or not. Over $300 would be hard to swallow.

I saw Henry's advertising it earlier in the week for $199 but now back to $249. I really need to see how functional it is before deciding. For instance, if you have to remove the camera from the case to get to the battery and sd card then I would probably wait until a third party makes a better one.

Why would battery/card access be a problem? You had to remove the camera from the case to change film. Now it's suddenly too much of a bother?

They make cases for other systems with access to the bottom of the camera. Similar to this:

tangfj, nice stuff. I've seen commercial solutions that were not nearly as good. Enjoy.

I like Gariz cases... they make the best half cases IMO. Generally much better quality for your money. Hopefully they make a half case + cover for the DF. I'm sure the cheaper cases are not too far off. Usually they start popping up on ebay not too long after new camera releases.
