Ugh. If that Otus had been 45 instead of 55mm I would have bought it right away. Now I got an excuse for hesitating. I guess it is the same for those complaining about the size...

yes, that would've been another story; I wouldn't have bought it, but at least would've consider buying it

The Otus even equals or bests some of the best super telephoto lenses ever made. Basically the more recent versions of the Nikon and Canon 300 and 400 f2.8 lenses. I think it is the first lens to ever do so. Those superteles always test extremely well.

No, what they say is that the Zeiss 50/2 Macro is almost as sharp at F2.0 as the Otus is at F1.4. But the F2 corners of the macro is a lot worse than the Otus F1.4 corner.
And after that - over F5.6, they're about equal for sharpness. But that (almost) goes for the old 50/1.8 AFD too, and that's a 100$ lens.

Yes, of course the Otus is the better lens, but the Zeiss 50/2 macro is able to deliver almost the same sharpness wide open as the Otus wide open. And yes, the Otus is 1.4 and the 50/2 is 2 and the 50/2 is not equal sharp into the corners. But where other 50's have to be stopped down to at least 5.6 to get this sharpness, the 50/2 delivers it already wide open. And that's very good IMO.
Personally I don't care about sharp corners wide open, because 99% of the pictures I take wide open will never have sharp corners because of the thin DOF.
I certainly don't mean to say that the 50/2 is as good as the Otus, because it is quite clear that that is not the case.

Doesn't really help if you can't tell if the subject is properly in focus. We don't all have 20-20 vision.
20-20 vision is entirely unnecessary for accurate manual focusing. Your eye focuses on a VF, which is only centimeters away, through an adjustable diopter objective.

And I have found my f1.4 image sharpness quality seldom dominate by focus error but lens itself.
