You can always emigrate, Aust always needs good people. But it's hard to leave a homeland, I get that.

Anyway, while on the peppy topic of 35mm lenses, the Huffster provides some RAW converted files:

I would probably already be living in Aussieland if it weren't so bloody far away. We could meet up and grump over a beer

Not terribly good is really not generous either. The Nikkor 35/2.8 has delivered really nice images for me.

i don't really feel that lenses have to be better than mediocre to provide really nice images, and i'm sure the nikkor 35/2.8 is better than mediocre. i'll have to peruse my thesaurus to find the best single adjective to describe it. i've produced a few really nice images with my sony e 16/2.8 too.

nevertheless, i feel certain, from the number of full resolution images i've seen so far, that the FE 35/2.8 is objectively better than either the nikkor or c/y 35/2.8 in most ways.

Alcohol is even more expensive than cameras in Sweden, isn't it?

Sony Germany runs a program for students with a 20% rebate so I paid "only" 1200 Euros which ist okay for a FF camera I guess.
Myabe there is a similar program in Sweden one of your daughters feels she really needs that Sony A7?

1200 is a great price for the A7. Thanks for the tip, I just checked, and indeed you do get some discount as a student in Sweden, however it only covers the A7, not the A7R.

Admittedly, but not enough to make an upgrade from a 100 Euro lens to an 800 Euro lens mandatory...

I do prefer Zeiss rendering, but 800 Euro for a 35/2.8 would probably keep me waiting for the 35/2, or saving up for an RX1. As you said, the stop from f/2.8 to f/2 is hugely important, both blur and speed-wise.

I would call the Contax and Nikkor "satisfying". Better than "competent", better than "mediocre", better than "not terribly satisfying". Both are nicely sharp and have nice rendering.

yeah, i don't think the lens is unfairly priced, but i'd certainly rather put that $800 towards other lenses.

Hi Simon,

I think the live view is better the 5d2 but not as good as the 5d3. The 5d3 has much better live view, but the tiltable screen is quite nice. I tried the 24 ts-e as well, and like the 17mm it was sharp into the corners on my quick test. The raws look very nice, much more DR than either of the Canons, with nice clean shadows. (which is my one big gripe with the 5Ds) There is no question the Canons have better build quality to them.

The adapter is my only concern at this point. It seems

Agreeable?

With respect to some M lenses on these cameras, the opposite sentiment - disagreeable - seems apropos.

Good thing i read some of these comments.

Sony UK will drop the price for the 7&7R around 200£ with student proof.

Makes it much more appealing. Yummy.

Sony A7r test with Canon EF16-35mm F2.8L II
Taken at 16mm and 23mm. RAW conversion with Lightroom 5.3. RC.
White balance correction and a bit of highlight recovery in Lightroom.

I'm happy that the corner performance with A7r is the same as when used with Canon full-frame cameras.

Body only packages (they also have a discounted body plus consumer lens):

1300£ vs 1160£,
then for the R
1700£ vs 1520£

Not a huge discount but good enough to tempt

Also applies to tablets, phones, PC's, etc…

Cant see too much difference in the files but maybe you see something more

slrgear test of the 55mm f1.8:

http://slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/1656

'The new Sony FE 55mm ƒ/1.8 ZA Zeiss Sonnar T* lens is a fantastic fast prime lens for the Sony A7R and A7 full-frame mirrorless E-mount cameras'

...with nice charts and decent analysis. Strongest cross-frame at smallish apertures - f5.6-f8 with f11 staying surprisingly strong. f2.8 is a big jump up from wide open.

Apologies if this has been posted before but here's Brian Smith weighing in on a subject that has been talked about but with a full suite of images showing the Sony E mount 10-18mm APS-C lens as used on the A7r.

http://briansmith.com/sony-a7r-10-18-e-mount-lens/

I sent a note to Brian asking if he could post some shots of subject matter other than billboards and also include a comparison at 18mm with the Zeiss ZM18/4 which he has previously declared "OK" on the A7r. I would re-buy the ZM18 if it met expectations.
