Haha, great name for a dog!

Looking at these shots, and the earlier ones in this thread, I get the feeling that the boke is similar to the ZF 50MP. It isn't ugly, and it isn't strained in any way, but it somehow also isn't like my favorite Zeiss lenses, the 100/2, the 35/1.4, the 50/1.4, the 85/1.4, and so on. There is some tension in it, and it somehow feels a bit "thick", if that makes any sense. I don't think that I need a lens this sharp or aberration-free at f/1.4, and I won't buy it for its boke, so I think I might save a lot of money. Unless I fall in love with the Nikkor 58/1.4 of course.

definitely prefer the lux bokeh. that'll save me some room in my bag.

I think there aren't many (any?) 50s that can touch the lux asph's bokeh. I didn't expect the Otus to beat it for bokeh smoothness -- it's probably just too well corrected to have that ultra smoothness.

The one I'm thinking of is even faster than f/1.4

i'm still confused, all the lenses i'm familiar with faster than f/1.4 have much worse bokeh including the f/.95 noctilux from a smoothness perspective.

i don't have a login there so i can't see the actual images, but the commentary indicates the summilux bokeh is indeed slightly better than the noctilux at f/1.4.

that matches with what i've seen of the noctilux (though images at f/1.4 are hard to find).

I am not seeing myself get nikkor58. Something seriously wrong with asking price I wish it at least sharp at center at WO.
This Otus do have good potential to me for sharpness as well as decent Bokeh. But the problem is $$$$
On the other hand, Carsten, if you haven't tried AIS 1.2 nikkor, I highly recommend it. Especially shot at f2, I didn't do that at the first time having it. This time, I shoot most stuff at f2 unless require low light, this is the trick I found for most f1.4 lens, will be very smooth and sharp at f2, especially this nikkor and 35lux R. This is also apply to 58 rokkor. The nikkor's problem is color, is very subtle, and kind of weak, but I love it noverthless.

My 50lux r e48 doesn't have the same improvement at f2 as I feel its f1.4 performance quite strong already. The same apply with 50lux asph m, its magic live in f1.4. Pixpp the lens at f8 missing the point for this specialized lens, IMHO.

The 50 Lux-M ASPH is IMO one of the best lenses ever made. It isn't perfect, but the rendering is just beautiful. If I do get an A7, I will try to find one at an affordable price.

Roger, love that shot of Zeiss. Is he a black lab?
Was that shot wide open? The contrast and lack of any coma with such shallow DOF makes it look like you photoshopped him into the shot.
Glad no one likes the lens, better chance to get a copy since in short supply. Can't wait to my rented copy from Lensrentals. Sweet lens, thank you zeiss! Good dog!

He's a Portuguese Water Dog, actually and that was at f/1.4 about 8-9 feet away.

I have a pair of PWDs and had planned on naming them Zeiss and Leica . . . but my 12 year old claimed naming rights on the second one so it's Zeiss and Yo-Yo. Poor dog is so trained that whenever I walk out back with a camera he gets 10 feet in front of me and sits down until I take his picture.

Wayne, the one I shot with is shipping out in the morning. Is that for you?

Carsten,

To me it reminds me of the 100 MP and the 135 APO more than the 50 MP. To me that is Zeiss' modern look. The bokeh is very good in most instances, IMO, but you can catch some harshness at some distances and towards the corners. Said another way, when it bokeh is good it it very good, but when it is bad it can be very bad. My impression anyway.

I wish! No, earliest I could get was dec 2nd.
Zeiss sounds well trained. Great job btw on the Eager Beavers story in your blog. Very interesting and amazing.
Post some more images if you have the time.

Imatest values are up now: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2013/11/otus-is-scharf

If any of our German friends would let me know if I screwed up the use of 'scharf' I'd appreciate it.

Thanks, Roger!

I am a bit surprised that you had to stop down to f/5.6 to reach peak center sharpness. Some of my sharpest lenses peak at f/4 and my copy of the Canon 35L even at f/2.8.

Do you think this is in the lens design, or is it possible that the extreme focus precision required at this sharpness, combined with the poor LV implementation of the D800, could be a limiting factor here?

Focusing is extremely difficult with the D800 LV in less than ideal lighting. I'm not sure if there is a way to boost brightness of the subject, that is my main issue with nikon LV, if I zoom in on a subject's face, the LV doesn't automatically brighten like it does with my 1DS3.
