My Canon FD 500 mm F 4.5 L contribution. The glass quality is great on these old lens equal to that of the newer lens if you can get used to the manual focus. I am fortunate to have one of the Canon original FD to EOS adapters
Ron, the FD 24L is as good as the original EF 24L, which is to say very useful mid-to-close range. The pin-cushion distortion at landscape distances is bad enough that by the time you've corrected for it, you may as well have been shooting a good 28. So I wouldn't hand it over to a dedicated landscape shooter and expect anything less than derision, but for reportage/event/street and environmental portraiture without a lot of working space, it's a strong performer. Not as well corrected or as sharp wide open as either the EF II or the Summilux-M, even stopped down to f/2.8, the bokeh's never as neutral as the ZM Biogon 25, and, though I've never used the lens, from what I've seen out of the ZF/E 25/2, it's not quite the all-arouner of that lens. I haven't decided yet if I'll keep it (I made sure to pick one up at a price where I can get out of it easily if necessary) or replace it with an FD 24/2. I do like it, but I'm not convinced it's worth it's bulk and bag weight yet.
Thank you!
Yes, it is a DIY focal reducer, I did some experimenting with many different lenses. These images are not as sharp as expected - likely a modification I have done - after the setup killed my EOS 5D fuse - is worse than before.
Have to make further images, and in case its really less sharp redo the old setup - the protruding barrel is now away.
With this lens I think pretty often about buying a Sony Alpha 7 - with that I would get infinity.
I do not know the EF 24mm/1.4L, but I don´t use my FD 24L very often. Wide open is is not very good, and for closed down work I have other lenses. So I use it for some low light or small DOF wideangle work.
Love this thread! Apologies for the Canon on Canon entry
My daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer last summer. Her outlook is very positive and I'm doing my best to capture the confusion, hope, despair and joy of going through treatment. The FL 55mm f/1.2 and EOS M is my go-to combo for its low light portrait capability and unique drawing style. The old lens has terrible CA, flairs up a storm, and can be incredibly difficult to focus but I really enjoy shooting with it.
All these pictures were shot wide open. I'm impressed by the wide range of looks you can get from this combo.
