p.3 #2 · OM-D E-M1 Rolling Impressions

Jordan,

I gotta ask -- Do you think the EM1 is worth over twice what a used OM-D costs?

Although I have an A7 on preorder, that's not set in stone and I'm almost just as welling to jump back into m43. I've owned the OM-D before, so I know what to expect (mushy buttons too close to each other, ISO 200 base and 1/4000s).

For me, I don't own or plan to buy any 43 lenses (wish I still had my 50-200 SWD though), but the EM-1's only real allure for me is the 1/8000 and ISO 125-ish. I just have a hard time paying $400 more for it.

Anything else I'm missing? Also wondering if you tried AF tracking with the GX7 when you had it.

Right now Amazon has a $200 off if you get the GX7 with the 35-200, which would be a nice little kit to have, and I love panasonic's ergonomics.

Argh, choices.

edit - cool, post #4000. Lucky me.

p.3 #3 · OM-D E-M1 Rolling Impressions

Twice what an E-M5 is? Don't know. I'm not upgrading personally. (This E-M1 is a review sample, not mine). That said, it is better in most any conceivable way over the E-M5.

It handles better, the direct controls fall to the fingers much better, AF is more precise, AF tracking actually works, the viewfinder is much larger and clearer, the body is sturdier (not that the E-M5 is poorly built), the grip is extremely comfortable, the WiFi is very well executed, etc, etc.

The LOW ISO on the E-M1 is ISO 100, BTW, and noise is better controlled, though you lose a little DR. Still good DR at ISO 100, though. Buttons aren't mushy, though the shutter button is spongy. Buttons are bigger too.

My recommendation is to rent one for a few days to see if it's really worth it for you.

Overall, it feels like an E-M5 on steroids. Whether that appeals to you enough to part with the money, I'm not sure. I'm not upgrading because I'm moving more towards Fuji as my main system, with m4/3 picking up the slack when I need really small and for macro use (plus a good backup system). If I were only shooting m4/3, I'd definitely be upgrading. I like the GX7 a lot as well, but to me at least, the E-M1 feels like it's in another league. I tried tracking on the GX7 with the same performance as any other Panasonic body. Ok on side to side, useless on forward and back motion.

I should have my full review complete this week (I hope).

Ok thanks; at the trade show where I played with the m1 and x-e2; the olympus representative didn't realize you could change the brightness of the EVF; guess I should have checked. Hum. The X-E2 Evf is not bad (I think it is the same as the X-E1 with faster refresh. Hum. I guess if I had hung on to the 12-60/50-200 I would be tempted with the M5 but I'm leaning more towards the E2 (but really wish Fuji would improve their QC on the lenses)

The E-M1's EVF is brighter than the E-M5's. On default, it's pretty dim, but adjusting brightness in the menu setup brings it to a point where it's brighter than my E-M5's. In any case, the E-M1's EVF is the best on the market, bar none. It's huge, bright, clear, with essentially no lag, even in low light. IMO, there's not a single way the E-M5's EVF is better. And I like the E-M5's EVF a lot.

Well, I have the E-M1 right now (it goes back tomorrow), and I hope to have my X-E2 this week (as soon as B&H gets it, they'll ship it to me...I'm very high on the preorder list and they said their shipment is enroute). The X-E2 I hope will feel to be extremely good. The X-E1's EVF is highly detailed, but the lag in low light is pretty bad. It'll be nice to have the EVF in the X-E2 be pretty responsive, though it still won't be near as large as the E-M1's.

Once nice thing I noticed out shooting at sunrise this morning: At ISO 100, you can visibly see the lowered dynamic range in the highlights in the EVF. It shows you where they will clip early, while at ISO 200, you get notably more range. Nice little visual reminder.

A couple shots from this morning. We had our first snow last night.

As a casual shooter who loves the streets, the E-M1 is light weight, very quick focusing with lenses available offering great color and contrast … works for me.

A few shots taken last week on one of what was probably Chicago's last days for warm weather for a while.

p.3 #11 · OM-D E-M1 Rolling Impressions

I did a little noise and IS comparison between the E-M1 and the E-M5 this morning. I don't have time to post crops right now, but I might try and do that later (won't be until this evening at the earliest). Anyway, direct head to head, noise performance is identical between the two cameras in RAW. The E-M1 looks like it controls the magenta cast at ISO 12,800 and 25,600 a little better, but otherwise, identical.

IS, on the other hand, confirmed what I've been seeing: The E-M5's is better. I don't know what exactly they did between generations, but the stabilized images out of the E-M1 just aren't QUITE as sharp as those I get on the E-M5. I took three shots each at 1/20, 1/40 and 1/80 sec with the 60mm f/2.8. All were acceptably sharp, but take the sharpest of each set of three on the E-M1 and they were all a little softer than the sharpest shots of the E-M5, and the E-M5 shots were all very similar in sharpness. This is not to say the IS isn't good on the E-M1. It is...it's just not quite as good at eliminating ALL motion. Whether that's due to shutter shock or some other phenomenon, I can't really say.

So chalk that up as a draw and a win for the E-M5. Of course, the E-M1 is better in essentially EVERY other way, so it's a pretty minor thing overall.

Jman, what's making you lean toward the Fuji over your E-M5? I'm looking for something lighter weight to supplement and possibly replace my 5d3. I haven't been able to get my hands on the E-M1 or the XE2 yet, but would be interested in your thoughts. Or will you likely address in your upcoming review? Thanks.

Thanks for the hard work and info Jman, good as always

I'm too considering moving towards Fuji as my primary system and keeping the m43 (Em-5) as secondary and "all weather/sailing/adventure sports" camera but I'm not really sure. There are some rather amazing rebates going on right now (Fuji X-Pro 1 for example) but not sure wether the money would be better spent towards m43 lenses. We'll see...

The Em-1 doesn't really feel like a big enough upgrade for me over the Em-5 though, not enough to warrant $21oo which it costs in Sweden.

I will not be covering anything about that in my review, because I review cameras based on their merits, not based on what I'll be shooting for myself or any personal preference. The E-M1 is probably the most complete camera I've ever used, to be honest, and the review will reflect that. It's not without some issues, but overall, there's very little it gets wrong and a ton that it gets very, very right.

I'm not moving entirely away from m4/3. There are things my OM-D can do that nothing else I have can do, and that's not going to change anytime soon. My new X-E2 (that I just got 10 minutes ago) will probably get more shutter clicks over the next year, but it still does things a bit better. While the X-E2 has remarkably fast AF when shooting targets with strong lines that the PDAF picks up, when it falls back on CDAF, it's still a little slower than the OM-D. The OM-D has great bells and whistles like in-body IS, the Live Time function for long exposures, a great touch screen, etc.

What's driving me to Fuji as my primary system is that I love the lenses (not that I don't love the m4/3 glass, because the good glass for m4/3 is also spectacular) because they are all excellent and all have a similar drawing style that I really like, so they feel more cohesive as a set. I also love the simplified controls of aperture ring, shutter speed dial and EC dial. It makes working quick and simple and very fun. And finally, the image quality is a step up. While it does control noise better for sure, the big thing for me isn't that, as has been pointed out, the noise in the E-M5 doesn't really show up in prints any more, and the IS can offset a lot of the high ISO advantage. For me, it's the tonal rolloff of the camera, which just leads to a richer file and I can push the Fuji files a lot further before they start falling apart.

All in all, Fuji's hit a bit of a sweet spot for me. The lenses are bigger, but my overall carry isn't much heavier, though the 55-200 pushes my limit on size (I wouldn't want any larger than that). The X-E2 fixes a lot of the usability issues I had with the X-E1, and so I think that overall, I'll be pretty happy to use that as a main body. I'll still definitely choose the OM-D for macro use (the OM-D + 60 macro is just spectacular) as well as for longer telephoto use...hard to beat that cam with the 75-300 for amazing range in a very tiny package, or when I just want a very small package...I can throw a pancake lens on and go.

We just returned from three weeks of shooting in Italy. All images shot using our new EM-1's I will say these cameras very user friendly. As a long time Canon shooter (5D MKIII )I find this camera (EM-1) to be a great travel camera in every way. Quick focus and the buttons just feel right for me. The new functions all are much easier to access than on the EM-5. I think Olympus has come up with a great combination. The last thing is I feel that Olympus viewer 3 really brings out the best in the cameras files. I like most don't like the snails pace that it performs at but it does output great files. My stock agency's IQ departments seem happy with the files also. I know PS and LR have more to offer in the area of controls but the final file just can't compare in IQ. One last area that I haven't tested is track focusing, if it's good I think Olympus has a winner.

I no longer have an E-M5, so I can't do side by side tests, but I'm fairly confident that the E-M1 is superior when using really slow shutter speeds. I was able to achieve critical sharpness with shots in the one second range with the 12-40 (at or near the wide end.)

Thanks Jordan. I'm now wavering on my A7 preorder and I'm going to read your full review.

I surely don't see myself paying 1400 freaking dollars for the EM-1, but after having forced myself to start culling my LR catalog today, it's amazing how many times I've wished I would have shot at narrower apertures on my FF DSLRs, so the razor-thin DOF argument is starting to lose some of it's weight for me.

Also, I was looking at some old E5 photos with my 14-54 II and 50-200 SWD and wishing I still had that gear, and maybe eventually I would move back into getting the 50-200 SWD with the EM1. More to think about.

What are you guys using for a charger? Just picked up one of these and the charger has something called a "cord", it's just like the one that came with my old Canon 10D from 1982, but I parked it next to my VCR and fax machine and used the one from 1983, which has the folding prongs, nice tidy package. Is there a charger I can buy that does not require the use of this "cord" thing?
