Am I mistaken in thinking that problems will be worse at infinity than a close range, as per Binltje's tests? So his results would be better than what one would get for landscape...

I hate to break it to you but the current new price for a Leica 28mm f2 Summicron ASPH is $4,295.00 (B&H). This is a bit disappointing but I will wait for more tests before a decision.

it's running $3k on the used market these days. i'm not terribly optimistic about it. the 28 cron seemed like one of the worst performers on the A7 in ron's (relatively thorough) tests.

I knew there was a reason I kept shooting my 28/2 Ultron. Ahhh the Leica prices.
Absolutely... that's the problem with tests done inside camera shops... few are a kilometre or so deep.
I keep hoping Ron Scheffler will get his hands on the A7 (again) and the A7r. Apparently Sony trusts him more than me, I wasn't able to walk out the door with an A7r last week even though it did fit rather nicely into my smallest bag.

Derek,
Thank you, I am quite aware of the used selling prices on ebay. I am watching these lenses closely as a possible purchase. If the lens doesn't cut it, then I am considering the R 28mm f2.8 Elmarit V2 providing it performs well on the A7r.

easy to find for 2800 or less
I want corners for landscapes mostly, so 5.6 is fine. We've already seen the centers are far beyond the M240 at all apertures.
As to Ron's shots.......nasty early jpeg engine working--hardly definitive.

i don't think there's any way to blame that on the jpegs, the center looks great while the corners look terrible. i would view it as definitive for the A7 + 28 cron combo.
Ah, but any nasty early jpeg engine influences are at least going to be consistent across all the frames shot, so the images do give a sense of where issues with some lenses may lie.
I didn't walk away from viewing the rangefinder lens sets with a sense of doom though, only that it would be prudent to avoid investing in new (new-old) lenses until there is an opportunity to check out lenses of interest on both A7 and A7r with production hardware. Close in probably a great many lenses will be lovely. For landscape shooters it seems likely the selection of really solid combos will be more limited.
As I've already decided to commit to the A7r I'll take what I get, whatever that means.

Thank Goodness they didn't give him an R, or you'd have us all so depressed.

How about the Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21mm on the a7r?
Any corner samples? It could be a great landscape / architecture lens.
I expect it will be quite good. That said, its at least a $5k lens, far too wide for my taste in landscape, and I think distortion wise probably not ideal for architecture. You'd be far better off with the canon 17 tse.

I have very similar thoughts. The MTFs for the R Elmarit v2 are almost as good as the M Elmarit ASPH (within a whisker of each other) and the R lens has a floating element to boot which should help with close focus. The R does weigh a lot more, but it is a pretty compact lens with a nifty built in hood, so I don' t think it is too big, but I am sure others will find it larger than they want.

Steve,
I would love to be able to find some WA RF M-mount lenses for the A7r. But if I can't find them there are the questions of the 28mm and the 21m focal lengths for SLR lenses. Since my normal operation would be to carry both a Leica M to NEX adapter and a Leica R to NEX adapter for M-mount and my Leica R lenses I am leaning toward the Leica R 28mm f2.8 Elmarit V2 and I wouldn't need another adapter. In the case of the 28mm focal length I am also considering Contax 28mm f2.8 Distagon though the Leica is considerably heavier, much more expensive and sharper than the Contax. I really am trying to avoid the Contax or the Zeiss 21mm f2.8 Distagon lenses due to their weight and their 82mm filter thread size.

Rich, would the Elmarit-R 19mm f2.8 V2 be too wide?

It is a possibility. When I had the original 19mm R lens (in about 1985?) I did find it hard to control the angle of view and replaced it with the R 21mm f4 Super Angulon which I still have. But I doubt the 21mm Super Angulon will be sharp enough into the edges and the corners. I could probably learn to work with such a wide view and it is a super performing optic. But it is as heavy as the the 21mm Distagons and heavier than the Contax version and I am somewhat concerned about protecting the front element. Also, I am not sure of the lens thread size for using ND or Grad filters.
I think the 28 Elmarit R would be a good choice Rich. Also - have you written off the 21SEM? It is such an awesome lens on the M240 but I'm not sure about performance with the A7....

Gary,
No question, the 21mm SEM is my first choice for a 21mm and since it is an M WA RF lens it is not only an excellent performer, but small, light, and uses a 46mm filter. Ron's test with the lens on the A7 demonstrated some major issues. From what we have been seeing with many of the WA RF M-mount lenses on the A7r I am beginning to think that it is going to demonstrate smearing and not maintaining corner sharpness even when stopped down. If the lens proves to perform well, then that is the one. But...
