Update:
I just received the Hejnar spacer for the Metabones MKIII adapter and it fits great. Aside from raising the adapter and adding compatibility to all Canon lenses, the Hejnar spacer accepts 2 screws making it a very solid solution for my L-braket. (See images)
The L-bracket I'm using is the Desmond-DAL-1. It's only $39 and I highly recommend it coupled with the Hejnar spacer. That is so far the best solution I have tried for the Sony A7R and all Canon lenses when using an L-bracket.
I will be comparing images from the A7R and Canon 5D Mark III using the same lenses. ...Show more →

What's this orange peel effect Diglloyd has talked about on A7R? Says it's to do with the lossy compression and is not seen in the D800E.
Basically as soon as you even start to apply the smallest amounts of sharpening to an A7r image, you will start to see an effect across the image that looks like an clear orange-peel texture has been laid over the image. I have a subscription to his Mirrorless site and have seen the samples. Granted he shows 100% crops to demonstrate it but it is really bad when he uses his normal value of "60" for sharpening that he uses for the D800E. At "40" it is still fairly bad and at "20" it is just noticeable. At "0" it is there but not really. However, he states that even 60 is not a high level of sharpening especially on these already AA-less sharp cameras so it worries him. Also he tested it in both ACR and Irridient Developer and both showed the same thing so not a individual program problem.
He only guesses that this may be a problem stemming from the known lossy file compression that is making all Raw files come in at 37.4MB, no more, no less.

So I haven't seen this, but maybe I'm not sharpening to the point he is?? Here's a post where I linked to one of my images at full size. What exactly would I have to do to get it to show in this image?

What part of an orange peel? I'm still not clear on what the effect is supposed to look like.

Ah, LR will cause a similar orange peel effect if you set detail high. It was really bad with LR 4 (it didn't happen with 3 or earlier) and I had to use much lower detail values of 5-10. LR 5 is much better, so I wonder if it's the camera or the RAW converters or a mix of both that is causing the problem?

Does anyone have a7r, metabones and VG-C1EM ?
It seems that with the grip, the plate on the metabones foot, even with hejnar spacer, won't be low enough to prevent the vertical grip from touching the QR :/
I've contacted RRS and they aren't yet working on Lbracket for a7r+grip, not enough demand yet. And I guess plate on the adapter is better balanced than on the body.
Vertical grip isn't available yet in europe so let's see ...
I just got the grip. Here is an image showing the grip + Metabones

You know how an orange has a texture to it on the outer side (don't have to peel it to see it actually!!). It looks like a clear orange skin with that textured look has been overlaid on your photo. Gets worse and worse with increased sharpening.

Lloyd did use both ACR and Irridient Developer and both produced the effect so that points to more of a RAW file problem more than the converter but probably more testing with other converters would help say one way or the other.

Thanks. What kind of subject matter? I'd like to try to reproduce this.

It's difficult to analyze this because we don't have access to his test images.
In my opinion he should have tested with Sony's RAW converter as well.

I don't subscribe so I don't have the ability to access the discussion explaining how the 8-bit lossy compression works. So I can't comment on the speculation that it stems from the lossy file compression. (I'll be following this closely, but I'm more worried about if this compression affects tonal transitions.) Another related possibility is that Sony is cooking the raw files with a little extra sharpening. Another possibility...as I recall the D800E still has an optical filter in front of the sensor, it's just been modified so it "cancels out" the anti-aliasing properties. Whereas I think I read the A7r removes that filter altogether?
Hmm. I don't know. Just got my A7r tonight and I'm itching to try it out.
But what I do know is after years of talking about "shadow banding" on camera forums now all the rage is going to be talking about "orange peeling."

There is an alternative to Metabones with autofocus and image stabilization support for the full frame E-mount now.
It comes with a nice rotating tripod collar (elevated).
If the build quality is comparable to the Metabones, it looks great for $289....
we would not even need an L-bracket for it.
I got this adapter because I had the Metabones v1 adapter which isn't compatible with full frame (I had been using it on my NEX). Compared to my Metabones, the build quality seems at least as good if not better. The RJC fits very snugly and feels solid. The Metabones has a little bit of rotational play...the RJC has almost none. And of course the rotating tripod collar is a very nice touch. So far so good...
Did a quick test with the 40mm pancake attached. Took a couple of seconds to focus in dim light, but it did focus. Looking forward to doing some testing in the upcoming days with my TSEs

Better off to just get out and start shooting because despite my reservations about this camera, I still bet it puts Canon files to shame for DR and detail rendering!!

Just wanted to report that I also got this in the mail today as well. (Was rather surprised since it shipped from China and it took one day less to get here than my A7r did from Adorama!)
Awesome. Does it support both AF/MF in the same "mode". One thing I don't like about the Metabones adapter is that you have to unscrew/rescrew the adapter with the button pressed/not-pressed to switch between AF and MF modes, vs changing that setting on the camera body.

I've tried both a Zeiss 100mm MP @ MFD (torture test for vibration because the lens barrel extends far forward @ MFD) and a 70-200mm and haven't seen any evidence of shutter vibration, testing from 1/125 down to 1/6.
